anyway, currently umming and erring over spec changes. tbh i think it's best to stick with what you see above as my final choice.

edit: damn. it's not being formally submitted, because i said I wouldn't, but i had a genius idea. swap the 27" for a 30", downgrade the CPUs to xeon x5472 (3ghz), make the UPS bigger (LN13775) to keep gaming for longer during a power cut, and......... RAID0 velociraptors 8D

I've sort of figured out mine now but as I supposed to be a judge I will refrain for the time being.

I have a sub question to all this though.

If someone gave you £5000 and said you had to spend it on techy stuff, PC/Consoles/ Audio Visual etc.. What would you buy?

Split it and spend it how and where you like. If you simply wanted a £5000 PC thats fine. If you want an array of TV's and consoles etc.. go for it

given what i already have... probably a decent 40" telly, some decent floorstanders, and the rest on a laptop & desktop

the rest on awesome speakers and other peripherals

I'd definitely do the 3 screens thing: but I'd downgrade my original post a little bit (mobo, air cooling, Q6600 etc...) and get three 42" plasmas or three 3D displays instead. I don't know how many games support 3D screens but having panoramic 3D vision sounds like a huge graphical leap forward.

well directhex is currently in the lead due to the addon of additional additions such as the aforementioned UPS which could act as an astute avenue of achieving elevated accalaids from the right honourable gentlemen judging this showdown (i could'nt think of anymore 'a' words )

Anyhow yeah i saw the UPS backup earlier and I must say, nice touch. However, you sure they can ship those nowadays? Last UPS i handled weighed as much as my car

Now for the explanation...
My research involves the processing of a lot of data and I've recently been looking into parallel processing and off loading some calculations to the graphics cards using Nvidia's CUDA library to speed things up.
Hence, the 4 main systems, all with dual GTX 280's (hmmm, toasty) running on a full PCI-E 2.0 bus, plenty of memory, a decent quad core CPU and a RAID 1 Storage.
As for communication between the machines, I've spec'd a 8 port 1000T switch.
The 5th system is based around the intel q35 chipset for a cheap, yet fast NAS machine.
As for containing everything I would custom build a case in the workshop to keep everything neat, tidy and running cool.

My ideal £5000 PC would cost £500, and then I'd have £4500 left to piss on whatever I wanted! Maybe a new car, lots of parties, a holiday or just put it towards a house.
