which memory? (stable) for an overclocker

    Memory Questions:

I want to purchase 2 GB of memory for a P5Q-E, Q6600 antec 900 rig, with 750tx, TR 120 extreme, 4860 . All this heavily over clocked.

So far I have only been recommended this by a colleague at work:

    A) ocz reaper Pc8500 - apparently not very overclockable

    http://www.ebuyer.com/product/142405

    b) Crucial balistix Pc8500 - don't know much about

    http://www.ebuyer.com/product/142405

    {or are these crap - and what's the best alternative} .

Please note a higher fsb for the P5Q's fsb speed will hopefully be achieved with further bios updates!

    budget is max. of £45

P.s : (no budget for vista currently, so sticking to XP32 for now, will upgrade ram and OS in about 9 months time.)

    Thanks

    G.Skill F2-8500CL5D-2GBPK

Been a lot of dying Ballistix recently (on the other hand they do have probably the easiest RMA for memory in the UK).

    MSI P55-GD80, i5 750

Dunno where you heard that from but OCZ memory are generally extremely overclockable. I would stick with the OCZ reapers as they are known to overclock very well on lax timings. Would a 533 FSB not satisfy you enough that you need to think about overclocking memory?

With only £45 I would would stick to the OCz reaper, if you can find some OCz flex on ebay that would be better. But really you should be thinking 4Gb as when you do upgrade your OS you'll use it.

You don't really need to overclock ram... just use a divider and PC6400 (will take you to 3.6ghz 1:1 with the ram)... spend the money on something that will actually make a difference like a better case (antec 1200) or graphics card (if you can afford nvidia) or if you don't want to change anything else just treat yourself to a prostitute

Re: which memory? (stable) for an overclocker

SiM's right, and you'll not get over 3.6GHz so you may as well stick to PC6400:

    - 2GB Corsair TwinX PC2-6400 CAS 4-4-4-12 ~ £33.65

    [Scan = free delivery]

Gotta say though, I'd be going with 4GB right away if I was you as DDR2 won't be any cheaper in 9 months time:

    - 4GB Corsair TwinX PC2-6400 5-5-5-18 ~ £54.57

Re: which memory? (stable) for an overclocker

I intend to upgrade the processor, over time to take advantage of this socket while i can and as prices drop. I may even move to fure C2d's.

So which memory, when u take this into account????

Re: which memory? (stable) for an overclocker

If you are planning to get a 1600 fsb chip then maybe you should consider ddr3... otherwise the PC6400 will still be fine if it is run with a divider... there will be no realworld noticeable performance gap between this and PC8500 (in nearly all applications)

    a 4Gb 800Mhz kit for sure (£60); 4Gb 1066Mhz if you're willing to spend an extra £20 (£80).

If you mean upgrading the processor in your current motherboard then a Q6 or Q9 series quad-core is the highest end chip you'll ever get, and 4GB PC6400 will be perfect for either.

If however you're talking about future chipsets (i.e. Nehalem, which begins its roll-out in Q4 of this year) then you'll need to buy a new motherboard (when they become available) and DDR3 memory.
