    Re: Samsung F1 series

For an O/S drive it'd be worth buying into the 320GB platter phenomenon, and as I'm rather fond of my AAKS drive, my money'd be on this:

    640GB Western Digital WD6400AAKS ~ £52.85

    Re: Samsung F1 series

I've got a 1tb f1 and it's quiet, but then again it's one of my storage drives so doesn't get used constantly. if the noise is comparable to a 500gb t166 samusung then it'll be quiet as I did have one of them as my OS drive until I got a raptor to replace it.

like others have said, if you want the fastest drive for a sensible amount of money then go for either a 320/640gb WD or a 320gb or 1tb samsung. the 500 and 750gb versions of the F1 have a lower platter density than the others just mentioned so they won't be as quick. If you don't need 1tb then maybe consider going for a 640gb WD, although it's quicker than a 750gb F1 and cheaper by about 6 quid it does lose 100gb worth of space....

Can't hear it over his case fans (Sharkoon 1000's) even when formatting / under load so...

    It receives my official rating.

I have a couple of 500GB T166s as well as the 1TB F1, so I can compare them directly - they're about equal in terms of seek noise, but the F1's idle whine/hiss is much louder.

The T166s are admittedly exceptionally quiet drives, but I'm still a bit disappointed with the F1... most people seem happy with them, though, so maybe I did in fact get a lemon.

My F1 1Tb drive is possibly the loudest drive I've ever purchased. Louder than my first 6GB IDE...

    Shame really considering its performance.

Only loud on read/write though Very scratchy. Almost unhealthy. Loudest part of my computer by a noticeable margin.

    Maybe not: http://www.storagereview.com/php/ben...1=351&devCnt=2

Look at the noise level. The F1 is quite a bit noisier than the T166. Prior the F2, the Samsung had a reputation of generating vibration induced noise, but that went for the T166 too. It might not be the problem if you are happy with the T166 (said to have the issue too, though I am quite happy with mine), unless the F1 managed to worsen the problem. If it's really bad, then it might be worth trying suspending the HD to the chassis.

    Re: Samsung F1 series

I can't really say anything bad about my 1TB F1. It has a fast transfer speed, Quiet and was cheap. I can't decide which I should choose next as they do a few different 1TB drives now :S

I'd have to suspect there was something wrong with it - I haven't noticed any excessive seek noise, although the P182's grommets are pretty good at masking the worst effects.

I actually bought a couple more F1s in the period before this necrothread was revived, and they were much better than the first (although still not as hushed as the T166s), so I guess sample variation did come into play.

Unfortunately they all died within a few months of purchase - I know it has no real statistical significance, but it has knocked my confidence a bit in Samsung drives and suggests their QC isn't all it might be. I'm always very careful handling HDDs and I haven't had to deal with that kind of hit rate with new drives previously, although having said that, from what I've read around the interwebs, it seems hard drives in general just ain't built like they used to be...

The RMA replacements are all running OK so far (touches wood), but I'm still treating them as liable to fail without warning at any moment, not that you should assume anything else with mechanical HDDs anyway of course...
