Re: £750 video editing rig guidance

Lol, my fault. I should've said put aside £120 for cooling plus gfx card, which brings it up the £800 mark. With the config above though, I will be salvaging my current 74gb drive. Good idea or not? In any case, I have a better idea now on where or how to scale things up or down. Thanks for all the help.

If the raptor is in good condition (and you don't mind the noise ) then yeah salvaging it is a perfectly sensible thing to do.

Cooling and graphics wise £30-40 on the graphics card (maybe passive) £30 for the heatsink for the CPU thats going to leave you £60 to spend on fans

For that case you will ideally have 2x quiet 92mm fans (the Akasa Ambers I suggested earlier are good) look for speeds up to a maximum of 1400rpm anything more than that they are going to be noisy. You will possibly benefit from a new rear 120mm fan as well again RPMs ~1400 or less are what you are looking for if silence is the name of the game. You could always get a fan controller so you can tweak the fan speeds to a noise level you are happy with. Scythe S-Flex fans are very high quality and the 1200rpm version is for all intents and purposes silent but will cost you £10 worth it though if you don't want to invest in a fan controller.

Yeah, forgot about the noise this thing makes. It's got better since I suspended it using some garter of the non-sexy type. I'm going passive on the gfx cards. The £120 covers the thermal paste, cabling, etc. so maybe just barely right.

If I remember correctly the Antec Solo has 2 methods for installing hard drives they are trays with soft silicon grommets (you can mount 4 disks) and elastic suspension (you can mount 3 disks, comes with everything you require to do it). So probably worth giving it a go and seeing what the noise level is like.

I edit professionally, and have done so for years.

your spec: FINE for HDV/XDCAM HD. My laptop is an E6600 (i.e. 2.4ghz) and it plows through XDCAM like nobody's business, so your quadcore will be the cat's whiskers.

Yes, I use vegas too, so we're on common ground.

Mac? why bother? you're not going to get anything else other than employability, if you want to work for someone else. When it comes to video apps, macs are NOT the paragons of stability they claim to be. Spinning pizza of death and FCP are gooood friends.

one change: get vista 64, not XP. Can only benefit from it, editing-wise. Am using Vegas 8.1 64, and there's some good news in how it improves playback and rendering times, easily upwards of 25%. Been using it since last year August, and no problems here. 8) Is a free upgrade it you're currently using vegas 8 32bit.

Re: £750 video editing rig guidance

Wtih Vista, can one configure it so much like how XP has "power user", etc. I can only recall 4, 5 max times when my 6 year old pc has crashed on me. I'm no pro, but I'd like to be able to pinpoint where problems are if and when my pc crashes. Which version Vista would be best suited for an editing workstation?

Also I noticed, I think I have got the wrong size case for the board, or vice-versa. I'd prefer a micro-atx case if there's a P5Q Pro verion for it.

versions-wise, anything 64 bit would be good. most peeps seem to go for Home Premium. I went for Business for some extra features. Wouldn't change suitability editing-wise.

The only P45 (chipset) uATX board is the DFI Lanparty Jr http://www.scan.co.uk/Product.aspx?WebProductId=876380 it will cost you though as its £106 over the £88 of the PQ5 Pro

And the Solo (case you picked) is full ATX why would you want to get a uATX motherboard? Unless you have changed your mind on the case?

The Solo does support full ATX. I think I was looking at the specs for the Antec mini P180.
