There is also the much higher TDP to think about with the current phenoms and how to get rid of that heat.

Intel just have it pegged right now, and AMD are going to have to do something quite speical to get the mainstream market back. We don't so much matter to them afterall, though making us happy is always good for word of mouth

Re: Will Core i7 have a huge effect on gaming over the next year??

AMD will have to pull a rather spectacular rabbit out of a hat.

They have only been ahead of intel twice that I can ever remember.

Firstly, back in the 386 days when they leased the 80386 chip design from intel....Intels went up to 33MHz, AMD poked them in the eye by releasing a 40MHz version.......Intel didn't lease any more designs to them after that IIRC...

Secondly was recently with the Athlon64 vs PentiumD battle, where Intel had rode the wave of success for far too long and had become complacent and tried to keep selling the same technology for far too long. AMD really crucified them during that time and I doubt Intel will forget it for a very long time.

So, as long as Intel keep the R&D up and keep their eye on the ball, I can never see AMD catching up with - let alone surpassing - Intel in the desktop CPU sector.

Top speed Phenom TDP is now 125W still on a 65nm process, compare that to i7 130W TDP 45nm process I don't think they are doing that bad really. You have to remember that they have (like i7) the memory controller on the CPU so they are always going to be higher than a CPU which doesn't.

Sorry didn't know that about i7, I was really talking about core 2. Too busy to read this sort of stuff at the moment so I'm slipping behind lol.

Still the fact remains that they aren't even competing with core 2 on any level really, so they need to do something special, and I really hope they do as I felt dirty enough buying the first Intel

I will be pleasently surprised if deneb even matches Core 2 clock for clock, let alone i7. I'm also sure Intel could knock out a 4ghz nehalem quite easily if they needed to -or just increase the cache - there's room for improvement already as I think they're just starting off low due to lack of competition and to give them room to increase the line up over time.

Looks like i7 OC nicely too.

As much as I want AMD to release a octacore CPU, I'm not holding my breath.

The Original Athlon also trounced the Pentium 3.
