Any ideas lads and ladies ?

Just fired up my 250 gig external HDD and Windows knows its there, but instead of reporting it as F:\Music, XP and Vista both say it's Cypress something or other.

Tried it on my Laptop, running Vista HP 32 bit, and I get the same error. Basically both systems pick the drive up and I am then prompted to install a driver so that each version of Windows can see the hard drive. Because for some reason I don't have this driver (have never needed it) I can't see the drives content.

Hoping it's not dead, it's a 250 gig Toshiba external, which has a WD ide inside, am planning on taking it apart tomorrow and connecting it as a standalone drive on my IDE channel.

Any ideas why this happens on both my PC and laptop ?

    have a look here

Error relates to external case not drive - may need to get a new external case

Re: Any ideas lads and ladies ?

It took me flaming ages to get the drive out of the case, it was well stuck in lol Still I ended up buying a bigger external drive as the 250 gig was almost full. Ended up popping into PC World and picking up a Maxtor Basics 500 gig, it's actually very quiet and only runs when your using it, the rest of the time it just sits there turned off, means it's not on all the time doing nothing untill I need it. Has a 3 year warranty too.

I've formatted the drive and ran some fitness tests on it and it appears fine so I shall use it for something else, always handy to have a spare 250 gig drive.
