I was put off the OCZ ones because of the stuttering, but reading other peoples experience with
them after a few reg hacks which sorts the problem I thought it would be quite fun and worth trying them.

Now after reading below I am thinking it would be wise to wait a bit

ssd drives don't have to wait for the (disk platter to spin to the right place/head to move to right place) so suffer no penalty for random reads
regular drives (usually) perform better for continuous sustained reads..

OCZ are bringing out yet another SSD soon (Jan 09 I think) with more perfomance than their V2 drivers (which were brought out about 2months after their first SSD!) so you can see the pace of change with SSD is immense at the moment, it's probably worth 'hanging on'. Easier said than done though if you want to play with the new toys

I assume by high end you are referring to SLC.

The Intel X25-E seems to have overcome the write speed issues that have plagued other SSDs (both SLC and MLC).

All that needs to be sorted now is price and capacity.

Tbh there is more than that, too many of the SATA Hosts are just simply too slow!

We ended up buying even expensive SATA/SAS RAID controller (about £300 i think).

Even then, I think that will bottleneck after the 3rd one.

It will be interesting to see if we see more of the PCIe simple plug in cards.

I'd like to see a return to the i-ram (RAM on SATA ) design.

The only problem with the i-ram was its poor capacity (limited to 4GB due to the ram it takes) and expense. Still amazingly fast even though it was SATA-1 (150Meg/sec)

A Nice DDR2 version which could take 32GB would scream.

    Heh, replying to my own post a month later;
I now see Acard has just released a DDR2 ramdisk which can take 64GB of DDR2...

Re: SSD's to get one or not... hmmm

I feel a bit like an idiot. I've recently just bought an OCZ SSD the cheaper 60gb version and have installed XP on it and am currently using it. I can certainly attest to the fact that the windows start-up, up to the point of logging in, is much faster but after that it all gets a bit slow and stuttery. I've done the registry tweak to turn off pre fetching advised earlier on in this thread, but are there other things I should change to? Page file etc? How do I go about doing this?

Would appreciate any help. Would be a shame to have to ditch my shiny new SSD.

Also, does turning off pre-fetching screw me up in some other way? I presume it does.

XP tweaks to get the most out of SSDs:

work through all of those, particularly the dskcache one

I just followed that thread, and found the tweaktown review of the iodrive.

ok, so so the iodrive is $3,000. but i thought i wanted an intel slc SSD. I was wrong. i needed an iodrive

(think it can't be used as a boot device at the moment, so actually, maybe i'll pass...)

Re: SSD's to get one or not... hmmm

From what I read about SSD, I think it was the intel ones I was reading about. I think they will be worth getting. It's not just speeds either. From what I hear they use less power, a lot more quieter aswell as there are no moving parts. I still think it's worth hanging on and waiting though. I think the technology is still to new.

In the future I believe they will eventually take over HDD's.

And the think that really made me interested, I heard they will be used in laptops that will have 40h+ battery life. Although, I think it was the screen tech that has more to do with that.... I'll stop babbling on now.
