Re: Decent i7 Config, any recommendations?

I have a similar issue. I want to change my motherboard (original Gigabyte 965P DS3 rev1) but there's no point, or is there?

    I have a 4870X2 so would I benefit from a newer PCI-E port? Would I get a better OC?

I have filled all of the ICH SATA slots and really don't want to use the JMicron slots

But is there a point to going for an i7 rig?

Well quiet. I wonder if it is shorting itself some how. The reason is, say I put the power swtich at the back to off. Connect mains power, the LED glows orange. If I turn the switch on it would do one of two things: (i) it'll auto start the mobo, don't know why but it always did this. It could be a result of the BIOS attempting to restore an AC power loss state (can't remember if I set this) or (ii) it'll stay orange till I turn the PC on.

With the DQ6, on pushing the power switch, the cpu fan will just start for less than 0.5s and stop; this led on the PSU goes off, until I turn it back off via the switch. It will sometimes either return to orange or stay dead.

Here's the interesting part, it's a TRICOLOUR led (red, green, orange)...why can't they put some sort of diagnostic info in the manual ?!?!

I also forgot, I couldn't actually test the DQ6 properly, as the replacement PSU's ATX12V connector was 4 pin, not 6 pin (I know I could have still connected, but did not want to disk subjecting the 4 conductors to 1/3rd more current than in the 6-pin version)....the DQ6 mobo may very well still work, but considering the headaches I had with it (i.e. never being able to install ubuntu due to the JMicron curse for one), I'd rather not bother much with it, sell it may be?

That's what I'd do. Sounds like you got an annoying problem there. That chipset is quite old now I'd get a better one that can support the 45nm CPU's and quads so as they get cheaper you can get one later on. Perhaps a P35 or P45 board would be good.

PS - You could always email them to ask what the LED does. They're quite quick with responding for me

    Will do, thanks

As for the 45nm, I actually still have the e5200 here...but since the e6600 works fine I didn't bother swapping em. For what this machine will be doing, the e6600 is more than enough as it is, although it'll be less energy concious as the 45nm procs.

Even the cheaper P31 chipset motherboard I suggested supports all the 1333mhz FSB the 45nm CPUs.

Re: Decent i7 Config, any recommendations?

Indeed it does, pretty impressive. I'm far more impressed by the ease of setup with the P31 than I have ever been with the 965P...and at *that* time, the 965P was their flagship C2D board (as I recall).

As for the server, today I've managed to get deluge running perfectly and am completely enjoying it. Finally, I have found a client that is by far streets ahead compared to my old faithful, Azureus, which I have been using for the past five years...
