Re: Ultima 90 install + temps

I'm planning on buying an IR thermometer soon, so I'll measure the temp of the back of the surface in contact with the CPU as well as the heatpipes. Will probably be cooler than the core temps, however.

Atleast it will give true readings.

Have you tried CoreTemp to read the temps??

Check the pics at the start of the thread. I used CoreTemp, RealTemp and OCCT.

Re: Ultima 90 install + temps

This is roughly how I applied the thermal paste (MX2):

Placed the heatsink on top, lined it up properly and rotated slightly from side to side then secured in place.

    What was I looking at?

Have you updated your MB BIOS to the most recent version??

The grey square represents IHS and red line = paste. Grey square around the outside is where the IHS lowers. And I haven't upgraded to the latest BIOS, but I probably will soon.

I meant, what was I looking at when I missed that you used CoreTemp.

Updating to the current BIOS is always a good idea.

Re: Ultima 90 install + temps

    Oh, right.

Just a note - Realtemp has the TDP set at 95C while Coretemp has it set at 100C - they are the default settings.

Re: Ultima 90 install + temps

you'd think that orientation was optimal, but I did some basic tests myself with my CM690 (120mm rear, dual 120mm top) and HAF932 (140mm rear, 230mm top) with my TRUE and Q6600@3.2GHz and 8800GT

both times mounting for upwards airflow movement was hotter by 5-6C, and higher during gaming.

Why? The source of air for your cpu heatsink is the hot air rising up by convection from your GFX card.

Re: Ultima 90 install + temps

The E7200 doesn't produce much heat so I don't think it really matters in the setup. Plus, the Antec 900 has good airflow.
Quick question - are there any protruding pins on the underside of an LGA 775 socket? The backplate touches the motherboard and applies some pressure so would be pressing against any pins.

Re: Ultima 90 install + temps

Shouldn't do, the backplate has 2 pressed out raiser lumps which have clear plastic pads on them, that should keep it off the motherboard itself and clear of the resistors that are on the back of the motherboard behind the cpu socket.

Re: Ultima 90 install + temps

OK, thanks. Just that I didn't check before I installed it. Did you notice that when you were installing the brackets on the motherboard, the screws don't completely tighten - the hexagonal bits on the back move out of the grips and the screws keep turning. Maybe it's to prevent over-tightening and cracking the PCB?

Thats useful to know, as i thought i would one day try that experiment myself. Now i know there is no need.

I'm considering adding a case fan to the Antec 900 side panel (I have one spare, so I wouldn't have to buy one). Should I have it blowing air over the graphics card or extracting hot air? Also check my last post^

Yep I noticed that, I had to keep the hexagonal head in place with one hand (well one finger of the hand holding the motherboard upright) while putting the screw in with the other hand.
It all goes together flush once it's all in place.

The one thing I hate about the ultima90 is the silly bar that goes across and the way it make the bracket stick out so much. Why thermalright didn't just supply the same X bracket as the ultra120 I'll never know.
I had to very carefully trim about 1mm off the end of the retaining bar to be able to fit it on my motherboard because both the mosfet and northbridge coolers are too close, if I had the X bracket from the ultra120 it wouldn't of been an issue.

Thermalright Ultima90, great cooler . . . Shame about the bracket.
