Exclamation Re: Non-newbie New PC Advice Pleeeease!

Hmm, Maybe I'm just being silly. I'd like to ask with you lot though!

After played World of Warcraft for about 1/2 - 1 hour, I alt tabbed and had a look at my core temperatures. Stock cooler, I was going to get an additional cooler, but I was told I wouldn't need it unless i wanted to OC. Are these temps within safe operating standards?

Intel Core 2 Quad Q8200 hardware monitor
    Temperature sensor 0 62°C (143°F) [0x26] (Core #0)
    Temperature sensor 1 58°C (136°F) [0x2A] (Core #1)
    Temperature sensor 2 60°C (139°F) [0x28] (Core #2)
    Temperature sensor 3 58°C (136°F) [0x2A] (Core #3)

ATI Radeon HD 4800 Series hardware monitor
    Temperature sensor 0 58°C (136°F) [0x3A] (GPU Core)

Although the highest temp there is 62, It had got up to 71c. AFAIK 71 is pushing it a bit high ?

That does seem a bit high, particularly if you weren't doing anything dramatic. I think 72c is about as hot as one of those things is allowed to get. I'd certainly not be happy hitting that sort of temp with the pre-fitted cooler and no overclocking. Seems odd to me - maybe you have a bit of obstructed airflow or something funny going on (like the ever-popular cable-on-fan-blade mishap).
Since you have a fully supported system, I'd give the bloke that built it a quick call and arrange a time to pop round to his shop.
If you want a bit more info, grab something like CPU-Z to get a look under the hood.
Incidentally, you don't have it sat next to the radiator do you?

    Is the cooler fitted correctly?

GPU seems fine but the CPU shouldn't really get that hot even under the stock cooler imo. I mean some chips can run very close to the edge with the stock cooler but generally speaking they will run cooler than that.

Definitely check the cooler is seated properly, I have a Q6600 over clocked and it doesn't get that hot.

Unhappy Re: Non-newbie New PC Advice Pleeeease!

Lads, gents, I've got bigger problems at the moment! I can sort out a few degrees after, THIS.....

Computer locks up and a single sound byte is repeated until reboot/shut off.
Display scrambles, boxes/lines/white/grey all over the screen.

My PC plays Crysis NICELY, all settings on max, max resolution for my monitor, no jitter. Plays all my games perfectly.....but RANDOM crashes!!!!!

Sapphire 4870 1gb card, apparently there are LOADS of people in my position with the freezing/crashing. Something about a "Powerplay bug" ? - I'm trying to sort it out now. I am a little bothered by the cooling, but this is a much bigger issue.

Here's a pic of what happens when it screws up, if anyones interested! - http://img255.imageshack.us/img255/8982/st830451ji2.jpg - This happens randomly at any time, in game or out. Regardless of high/low temps.

On the cooling front....others have told me that my temps are fine.....I want a nice cool machine, but I want a stable machine even more. To be honest I feel like crying, but I won't.....I'm a big boy now.

Re: Non-newbie New PC Advice Pleeeease!

    Start off with,
Drivers, make sure all drivers are up to date.
Stop overclocking, set every thing to stock settings.
    Does lockup still occure?

    If yes then,
    memtest.
Tempture while under load test, ATi Tool is good for gpu testing & monitoring. Also check voltages while under load.
CPU burn test of your choise while monitoring temps. Again check voltages while under load.
CPU + GPU test, make sure the temp don't go too high or the voltages out of range.

Still nothing going out of range? still locking up?
Warranty on all the parts, the shop where the guy who built my PC resides is very close, easy to sort out if something goes wrong!

Re: Non-newbie New PC Advice Pleeeease!

    *sigh* I'm exhausted!

Had so many problems with vista, i decided to just reformat and install XP. WHAT a difference in stability. I still get the odd freeze, which is annoying, but compared to what the lockups were like on vista, its a lot better.

I was getting IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL, had a look at the mini dump last time my PC crashed.....something to do with intelppm!?

I haven't ironed all the creases out yet, but I'm getting there.
