Webby - I've used my AMD3000XP+ processor for years, worked flawlessly. I'd go with AMD again if it weren't for the 1000000 reviews/tests/comparisons saying that intel was better. Im taking your advice over what i've read though, gonna go check it out! Any comparisons/charts OR just your opinions - much valued!

The cache means nothing about 1280x 1024..

High res gaming doesn't require the cache and the E5200 isn't exactly lacking it anyway.

Also agree with webby on AMD.. cheaper boards again and a fantastic dual core chip for stock settings.

See now, you lads (or men if you're older than me, im 20) are swaying me back towards AMD. MY thoughts were.....so many people going intel, good deals to be had with AMD....BUT....AMD's risen their prices? Ive checked out the intel market for a while now, time to compare against AMD. Interest : DRAGON!? (from amd)

You want the best performing cpu for the best price stick with intel!

And don't go for a lowly E5200 or the E7*** series like mentioned, go with Intel and you wont be disappointed, AMD have fallen far to far behind in the performance market

Re: Non-newbie New PC Advice Pleeeease!

Here is one review comparing the E5200 and the X2 7750BE

    http://www.bit-tech.net/hardware/cpu...00-oc-review/1

Basically what it shows is that at stock settings the AMD is the better CPU but when the E5200 is overclocked (a lot in this case 4GHz) it takes the lead, they also overclocked the 7750 but couldn't get it past 3.1GHz which helps but not enough to overcome the massive overclock on the Intel chip.

I will let you read and draw your own conclusions though.

And sorry to say.. but don't listen to that stuff about the lower end intel chips if you were to go for one.

But I would stick with AMD, I have done on my last two builds having gone for a couple of E6600 based systems.

But its being paired against a crappy E5200!

And im sure the OP is in the market for something a lot better and pricier!

Being able to afford more and paying a lot more for 3 or 4 fps (maybe) is two different things.

I think you will find that AMD are very competitive performance/price wise you just need to compare the right processors.

    At stock settings
    Intel E5200 (£60) vs AMD X2 7750 BE (£65) - the AMD wins
Intel E8400 (£145) vs AMD Phenom 9950 BE (£145) - Draw depends on what usage is considered
    Intel Q8300 (£160) vs AMD Phenom II 920 (£160) - AMD wins
Intel Q9400 (£190) vs AMD Phenom II 940 BE (£190) - AMD wins

AMD do not have a processor to compete with Intel's top flight but the new processors are very competitive at their price point.

Re: Non-newbie New PC Advice Pleeeease!

brilliant information, loving the intel vs amd comparisons! To be honest I haven't really checked out all of AMDs range. Before reading anything about how good intel supposedly were, I thought "I'm gonna go with AMD because they've done me well on this processor for years" - even if it's not a logical decision.

The differences in prices on the processors is BIG......I *assumed* a £150 price tag for a decent dual core. Whats "the OP" ?

This is a phrase for the person who made the Opening Post,ie, the "OP"!!

BTW I thanked you by mistake as I clicked the wrong button to quote you!! I assume you do not mind!!

To be honest if I were going for an Intel based system from scratch I would either get one of their under £90 dual cores and overclock it to 3ghz or get a Core i7 system.

IMHO the AMD Phenom II is an excellent quad core for the price and is more than competitive with the Core2 quads at similiar prices.

However the most annoying thing is this perception that everything has to be overclocked to 10ghz to get acceptable performance. A Core2 or a Phenom 2 at 3ghz is plenty fast enough for most people.

If you have money to burn then a Core i7 is the fastest you can get.

Dell are doing a nicely specced Core i7 for under £900(best to buy it with a 6gb DDR3 in a triple channel configuration):

    http://configure.euro.dell.com/dells...=D02SX04&s=dhs

If you want to build it yourself:

    Core i7 920 - around £250
    Aftermarket heatsink -around £50
    Motherboard - around £180 to £250
    6gb DDR3 RAM - around £150 to £200
    Power supply - upto £100
    Case - upto £100
    BluRay/HD-DVD optical drive - around £70
    640gb HDD - around £60
    GTX260 216 shader version - around £200 to £220
    HD4850X2 - around £250
    24' LCD - £160+
    Keyboard and Mouse - £10+

Re: Non-newbie New PC Advice Pleeeease!

I'd stay clear of the Phenom II, i7 or quad core
Why? for Wow and DVD watching there's NO point.
As are some of the more powerful GPU's mentioned, WoW is just not going to push them even with a 24" monitor.
2GB memory is a minimum, lower latency memory the better. MMO's highest demand is on the memory and even that's not too great.

What I'd get in your position

    good p45 motherboard £100

e5200 £60 or e7400 (yes I know they are looked down on but for £100 they are a good price)

Aftermarket heatsink 120mm fan verity, £25ish

2 or 4 gb DDR2 PC2-6400 800mhz cas 4, £35 for 2x1 or £65 for 2x2, (this is the other reason for going for an e7xxx over an e8xxx to get overclocking out of the e8xxx you need to up your memory speed and price.)

Hard drive 320mb singleplatter £42 eg http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/320-G...MB-Cache-89-ms Maybe two of them one for OS and non gameing software one for games and stuff.

case, dependent on taste but £100 is a good high ceiling I'd not like to go over that and probably under, personally I have real problems finding a case that ticks all my boxes, the cloest is the
sliverstone fortress but at £150 it's just too much for my pocket

Sata DVD r/w £16ish my personal fav so far are the LG ones I'd not bother with a lightscribe, yes it's an added feature but another £5 and the blank DVD's are more expensive, it writes normal ones as well but a lightscribe disk you flip it over and it can burn a pic into the otherside of the disk, not really that vital.

PSU 450-500watt good model, around £50

GPU is tough, I know the new wow zones are more demanding, but not how much more. I run City of Heroes/Villians happly on my 22" with an older 9800gtx with EVERY setting turned to max and I know it's more graphically demanding than WoW.
So I'd say a 9800gtx+ £150 or 4850 £125, now while the 4850 is cheaper I really don't like most of the coolers on these hot cards and the cards with the best coolers eg HiS HD4850 IceQ are aound £150

Mouse and keyboard, these are again a bit like cases, I know quite a few people love the programable keyboards to set up marcos for MMOs it comes down to you and how you play.
Personally I'm a rampant clicker so just got myself a decent quality basic keyboard (£10max)
A laser mouse is very nice and one that is confortable for your hand/style of using one.(£20max)
Oh yes Corded for both, nothing worse than running out of charge on a wireless esp with the length of time you can sit infront of an MMO.
For programable keyboard the Logitech G11 and G15 are the most commonly used £40 and £55

Monitor, if you've got your heat set on one go for it, personally I think the ultra sharp's are too expensive and really more than you need (aimed more at a pro-image/video editing market) (24" ultra sharp is around £425)
Have a look at the Dell True colour instead for £265
    http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/24-De...400-cd-m2-5-ms

EDIT: Oh and do overclock the above system, it will be very easy to do a basic overclock and push ether cpu to 3ghz or more. (read the overclocking sticky )

I'm in a kind of similar boat, my thread: http://forums.hexus.net/hexus-hardwa...ns-please.html . I think you need to start with what CPU you want and what GPU and then motherboard etc to suit. For me I think it's a choice between a core i7 920 or a phenom II 940 black edition. Probaly the phenom II 940 will serve well for a number of years.

Intel E8400 (£145) vs AMD Phenom 9950 BE (£145) - Draw depends on what usage is considered

AMD do not have a processor to compete with Intel's top flight but the new processors are very competitive at their price point.
Webby is that at stock speeds?
How do they compair with some basic overclocking?

Not done any AMD overclocking a a long time, how simple is it?

I seem to remember that clock for clock the intel c2d chips where a good deal better and the cashe wasn't a major limiting factor on them.
