common sence says you clone the drive and chkdsk the new drive to fix the corruption
I did not treat the author like an idiot so I assumed (it seems correctly) that backup is an obvious step before doing anything.

And, yep, I might go too far and too quick, but the 'chkdsk' is a good way to ensure if the hdd is still worth anything

Not necessarily - a disk might complete CHKDSK successfully but that doesn't mean there isn't a mechanical fault.

Personally I never look at the 'my system' bit - if someone can't be bothered to post what they have and what's causing the problem, I don't go looking through the my system bits (see my system! - it is genuine, although not in use at the moment! ) Seriously, system evolve over time, and many people run more than one, so the data there may be out of date.

Hmm - not necessarily - clicking can come from an underpowered disk (usually 2.5" on a laptop USB) and just indicates teh head loading or unloading, or, as watercooled syas, the head servo trying to synchronise with teh servo tracks

you log it as excessive noise, give em card details and wait for the new drive, once you get it, clone the info to the refurb they send, wipe your old one and send it back.

there are various freeware tools to wipe the info and make sure the average user cant get it back using recovery software.

I don't think anyone was suggesting that you were treating the author as an idiot!

However - any drive that starts making an abnormal noise should be treated as suspect, unless a definite cause is identified (susch as low power, bad data connection, and the advice here by all participants is valid. If it was my drive I'd be inclined to back it up, wipe it and return it using the methods various contributors have suggested.

Yes, I probably could have stated the spec of the system the query was in regards to but as it was for a hard drive in there, I didn't really think it would be necessary. That and I had already done your checks such as power, leads, monitoring software errors/access leading to excessive use.

With a number of systems being used by myself at home/relatives/work, with no one machine in specific, I did not want to add system info.

I learned to do routine backups years ago, I recollect Ghost being the tool of choice then. I also started to use partitions then as I had a whole drive reformatted and data lost by a sibling who decided the machine was in need of a fresh install of Win 98SE because he didn't like Windows 2000!

Anyway, the drive has been wiped now and is ready to be shipped when I can get around to it.

I would finally like to say THANK YOU again to all the folk who have replied to the thread, now I have some peace of mind.
