    sleep mode

    Hello,
any idea how much power computers use when in sleep mode?
i want a compromise between leaving my computer on so i can do stuff for my business and turning it off and having to wait around 2mins for it to be ready to use.

maybe Zak can measure it using the device he brought to check how much power stuff is using.

    Re: sleep mode

It depends very much on the computer in question. Things like wake on LAN, wake on USB keyboard keypress all add to power consumption when "off". I think the last machine I measured came up as 7W when off.

    Re: sleep mode

I know my granddad did a lot of research when he got his new laptop (first upgrade in 26 years!) and found out that sleep mode consumed less power in sleep mode over 2 days or less than they would have done if they were turned off, considering the power needed for boot-up.

I don't know what his sources were, or if it's true, but he was a lecturer in electrical engineering back in the day so I'd be surprised if he was misled.
