The Q9550 and 5850 would come to £400 and the RAM and Case costs £130 and the Monitor £135 so altogether = £665 which is slightly over-budget.
An AMD Phenom + mobo with the same specs would come to the same price while an i5 750 + mobo with the same setup would come to £50 more so imo a new Phenom and mobo would be better at the same price. The OP definitely has a lot of options to consider.
The OP already has 4GB of DDR2 which will do the job already so I was assuming that they were sticking with it!! I assume that they either have 667MHZ or 800MHZ RAM so they could run it in a 1:2 ratio with the 1333MHZ FSB of the Q9550.
There is also the cheaper Q9505 which has 6MB of L2 cache which is also worth a look.
Anyway I was just indicating that upgrading their current setup is also another alternative way to the OP to improve the performance of their PC.
