In most games a dedicated card obviously won't make a difference. But in the games that do have physx, it will. ATI cards will not support physx (easily) so it's mearly a matter of deciding whether to have it at all. In the case of pauldarkside's system, I agree with him that a physx 8800 in an already nvidia GTX 260 system is a waste of space, but in a NON nvidia system, it isnt if you want physx at all (and you don't mind using a small driver patch). The game I'm most looking forward to playing with Physx is arkham asylem

I'll let you guys know when I get everything, but I've already got my i7 920 D0 stepping, ram, and LEGAL copy of windows 7 64 bit ultimate (sheesh, been a long time ) I still awaiting the arival of my WC components and my motherboard, which due to availability issues, is now an EVGA X58 classified ) I've also place preorders of HD 5970 like crazy, so I should get atleast one of them.
    Nice Mobo
Make sure you give us pics as you venture on!!

Re: My first and most uber watercooled rig

Hi ppl! I've gotten everything except the HD 5970, which is comming next week along with it's block. (I'll provide plenty of pictures and maybe a youtube video in due time )

I wanted to ask for some advice: I was thinking of adding another rad and maybe another pump if they would help. Heres a pick of the layout I was thinking about:

    1: MCR320QP Rad
    2: Pump
    3: T junction
    4: CPU block
    5: Chipset block
6: GPU block (HD 5970 only)
    7: Thermochill PA160 or other
8: fillport on top of case
(sorry, just realized the numbering isn't logical)
The red is the tubing and the arrows flow direction.

Im cooling the G92 passively and i'm WC the chipset because ive fried chipsets before, and Id like the peace of mind and absence of massive stock heatsink

I've not included the 2nd pump becase I'm not sure how usefull it would be. I've already got an 18W Liang DDC 1.3 pump.

So what do you guys think!?

Re: My first and most uber watercooled rig

You want the fill port before the pump so it can push the water around the loop as you fill it.

I take it that 2 is not only the pump but also the reservoir, if not you're missing it and that's a big pump.

Oops, didnt think about that one. I'll certainly do that, but then i'll have to get an elbow to avoid a 90 degree tube bend

If we now have the tube connected to the pipe inlet as i've decided to change to, then isnt the water volume held in the t-line more than enough to act as a reservoir?

Re: My first and most uber watercooled rig

True, however water in that pipe will not really take much part in the cooling loop.
Part of the reason for a reservoir is heat capacity.
You're taking heat from the components via the blocks and moveing it into the water
Then you're takeing the heat out of the water and into the air, via the rads.
So the more water you have to more heat that can be stored, although at the same time more fluid mean the avarage fluid temp take longer to increase, rad's probably have an optimal working fluid temp, don't know what it is off hand.

Must admit I've not done any water cooling, so I'm working off my basic understanding of thermal dynamics, how a water cooling loop work and what's commonly found in a cooling loop.

I'm sure someone else here with more experience on the subject will be able to explain it better.

PS the Laing DDC-3.2/MCP355 12V DC Pump w/Acetal XSPC Top is a combined pump&reservoir

I believe that what will happen is that because the heat input and output to the system is unchanged, the only thing that will happen is that it will take longer for the system to reach equilibrium temperature, but that temperature will still be the same.

well what they sent me doesnt look much like a res:

    (I assembled it already)
So yay or nay on the extra rad, and yay or nay on the extra pump?

Re: My first and most uber watercooled rig

XSPC do 2 DDC tops, one res and one not. The res is clear, that is clearly the non res top. They perform virtually identically so no concerns. Just doent have the res functionality.

Re: My first and most uber watercooled rig

You don't need a reservoir per se, the tube that links the fill port to the loop acts like one. I once built a WC loop without a res but with a fill port and a length of tube but it took bloody ages to get all the air out.

Fitting a 'proper' res is a good idea though.

Re: My first and most uber watercooled rig

hmm, i'm going to have to rethink some the setup if I add a res, but I think my t-line configuration might be a good one for the purpose of bubles (not shown in the pic) and i'll add another T infront of the loop where one is shown in the pic to help drainage

Re: My first and most uber watercooled rig

Well im ordering the second rad as soon as the HD 5970 block comes into stock at DangerDen. Im ordering the Black Ice GTX120 since the PA160 isnt in stock, unless the GTX120 isnt any good or there is a better one?
