    Re: Good memory deal

On forums people have mentioned 6-7-7-18 @ 1600mhz but i think cas 7 at 1600mhz sounds awesome. I would be overclocking, I have a corsair h50 and I think 3.7-3.8 with a mild overvolt would be nice, no point in 4 ghz really. I'm no expert but I gather that raising baseclock raises frequency of both cpu and RAM?

I'm running 1440Mhz RAM @ 7-7-7-20 with 1.55v and it gives me around 17GB/s of bandwith in relation to write/read/copy speeds. CAS 7 @ 1600MHz would be uber, if i ran my RAM at its advertised spec, 1600MHz @ 8-8-8-24, it gives me less bandwith than the former settings.

Yes rasing BCLK will affect both CPu and RAM, this is why i said you should have your RAM on the lowest divider if your pushing for pure clock speed becuase then you'll need to give it less voltage - as opposed to running it at say 1333MHz from scrath - hope you can follow this

Well I can certainly follow, if not understand. I'm an AMD overclocker really so Intel is new to me but couldn;t resist a GD65 at half price! Got my antec 300 today too

Ordered Wednesday ~ 6pm. £7 for friday pm delivery. Not too bad to be honest.
And I thought the stickers looked silly that's all. Looks sweet with just the metal Heat sink and GeiL

From what I understand overclocking the new i5/i7 is very simular to AM2/AM2+/AM3 and far closer to amd overclocking than the older core2 socket 775 overclocking.
Read the i7 1366 overclocking thread, socket 1156 is basically the same (sans tripple channel)

(Must say that one of the big advantages to 775 was the ease of basic overclocking on it)

I pretty much Understand it, I just don't like the fact that there are all these weird voltages like PCH VTT etc...

The new names is the only difference in my opinion - more so if your on 1156 as the memory ratio doesn't have to be double/half(?) that of the QPI.

Also what the hell is VTT/QPI - i read somewhere its the memory controller ?

    Re: Good memory deal

I can't actually see an option in the bios of my gd65 for setting the RAM speed itself. I jsut know it's stable at 6-7-6-21 1T @ 1.64v. I jsut use a 200mhz base clock with the 4x multi
EDIT: I take the divider ratio of 2:8 is what you mean. Is that low?

The ratio is what you use to set the speed, my GD-65 has the option of 2:10 though (IIRC) - what speed is it exactly your trying to hit ?

Edit: Diving into the bios (v1.5) reveals the highest divider to be 1:6/2:12 - what ever your prefrence is

I'm at 2:8 I think, I'm nto aiming for a speed, I'm happy with 1600mhz cas 6 . Was just wanting to find out a bit more about how it works

If youve got that GeiL stuff you could just raise the multiplier up by 1 and get 2000Mhz (?) with pretty much the same settings (voltage and timing wise) i should think - it might not amke any difference performance wise mind you.
