Hmm interesting post - I haven't quoted it all as readers can refer back to the original.

I personally don't regard Scots as a separate race - although I suppose Scots - along with Cornish, Irish and Bretons are perhaps more Celtic than the English, which have (through invasions and so on) been more intermingled with Norman, Germanic and Mediterranean races to form an Anglo-Saxon race, but in terms of actual race, I think that is a pretty meaningless distinction.

As for your own ethnicity, I neither know nor care, Hexus has members from all over the world, and all are weelcome provided they abide by the Hexus rules and conform to the Hexus ethos. WE only have your word that you are from Scotland (your IP address resolves to Manchester - but that may Just be the HQ of your service provider - not that that is really relevant either)

As moderators and admins, we try to upho;d the few rules by ensuring that ALL members can voice their opinion, provided it is done in a reasonable manner. If posts are inappropriate because of language, or content, then we will moderate them.

Members gain respect among other members by the quality of their posts and their general behaviour on the boards. As a new member, you will be given a warm welcome, and as your posts are judged by other members, you will gain (or lose) respect appropriately. But unless or until you give cause to think otherwise, new members are welcomed, and we do take steps to protect new members against any hint of bullying if required.

However your own track record has not been good. Very soon after joining, you engaged in a spat with another member who disagreed with you. That inevitably throws your credibility into some doubt. You have now followed this up with another rant, which further damages yoir credibility.

You may know more about IT than the rest of the combined membership - but your haven't shown any evidence of that - so until you do, why should you be believed?

However, you remain welcome to contribute to the forums - but on Hexus terms. If you dont like those terms - don't contribute - it isn't compulsory. If you do continue to contribute with insults, then we will take action. That would would be a pity, because you have made some good posts in other threads.

As for backing up one section of the community? I would refute that - I will support any member who has been treated unfairly, although I might be somewhat slower to act if that member has brought it upon himself.

So bottom line is that you are still welcome to participate - but that participation has to be within the rules and ethos of Hexus.

It's not a home server FFS, read the fecking thread!

Just because the title says low cost doesn't mean it has to be £200, low cost in server terms can be £3000! It's all application dependant...

And without knowing the full details how can you determine whether or not ECC mem is necessary or not?

There is a reason that this hardware exists and it is for mission critical applications... You can't comment on how useful it is without knowing the OPs full details!

Also, do you not find it strange that no-one from the whole forum has backed you up, have you not stopped to consider that you're the one in the wrong?

Nice machines Al but the fact there 2.5" sas would kill the budget, looking at a touch shy of 3k for a server with 2008 standard and SQL on it atm..

You start off by saying ebuyer is the best hunting ground for a low cost server, ok, so you've obviously grasped the point straight off the bat, low cost server, nice..
But then you mention buying a decent i3 desktop, that’s the first place you go off track, then you say bargain at £299, bargain yes, decent i3 desktop, no, so what looked like a good start went out of the window by your second line.

Then after Dave's post you say that the machine you link too comes with a board that'll do a 4Ghz overclock, brilliant, how much would you trust a machine that’s cheap and runs overclocked, again missing the server point, also, if you’d bothered to check your link it comes with 2 memory slots, so, given I said 12Gb of ram that'd be either a pair of 6gb sticks or better...
Then comes the first dig, suggesting Dave doesn’t know how a server works, now, I'm not being funny here but you've just suggested a cheap and nasty i3 budget desktop when Dave suggested a Dell PowerEdge 410, I could go into the details of just how wrong you are on this one but as I'm pretty sure there’s a character limit and I'm already expecting this reply to hit that limit and then some, I'll let you work it out yourself.

You then go into how if I had loads of money I could buy whatever IW anted and why would I be asking the question if I did, well, Dave pretty much covers that one in his reply, but just in case you missed that point as well (I'm only on post #17 as I'm typing this out) there are lots of people on Hexus from all walks of life with a vast array of experiences, I like to call on that experience from time to time, regardless of my own personal experience, this occasion just happens to be one of them..

Then again, after presuming that Dave's name links him to some sort of wordy book thing you failed to read his original suggestion of my previously mentioned Dell PowerEdge 410..

Then, and just so it doesn’t look I'm singling you out, Zak suggests that "he has built more PC's that you've had hot dinners." and "He's prolly sitting on a Core i3 and i5 at the moment." Now that’s wrong, I've probably only built about 300 or so and either your young and haven’t actually eaten much, of live somewhere where there is no way of cooking food which, considering it says under your name that your location is Scotland I guess that might actually be true and my current PC is a Q6600 as can be seen by the spec thing over there <-----

Then post #23 you really loose the plot, there’s only minor references to servers, instead you go on a rant about how your being bullied and attacked, now, I haven’t read the rest of your many wonderful and useful posts on the forums, but seeing as your join date says Feb 2010 I'm starting to get a feel for what they might include, and seeing as your tone and lack of reading ability seems to point out, you’re the one that’s trolling and calling people names..

    #31 now were getting somewhere..
"Then to "Play the RACISM card" was the last straw..."
Sooo, you play the, "your being racist, racist card."
That means one of two things in my experience, either your one of three things.
1, A troller that knows what to say to get a response from people, which in turn gives you the momentum to carry on posting drivel.
2, A person of colour who has for whatever reason been trampled down in his life (presuming your male) and now takes offence to everything that could be deemed racist and plays the you’re a racist card at every opportunity where someone disagrees or argues with them.
3, ginger, I have recently been informed that ginger people think they are a race after some interesting YouTube footage of a ginger chubby dude going right off on one..
A combination of any two of the above only serves to multiply the problem exponentially.

Oh, well, that turned out shorter than I was expecting, it would appear the thread has been trimmed slightly as there were 3 pages and it now seems there are only 2, I can only guess what the missing page said, but I'll post what I think anyways.

You’re a troll, you’re from north of the border, your sign up date was this month.
That leads me to the conclusion that, being a cheap, probably ginger tight arse Scot you've signed up on these forums to get your free shipping from Scan, to do that you have to have at least 50 (iirc) posts so you start off by posting a few bits and bobs that aren’t really of any value, however, when your challenged you get really pissed off really quickly and the ginger gene kicks in and all the bullying you had to deal with at school comes flooding back, hence the over use of calling people a bully, saying your being attacked etc..

However, given that I've just eaten a nice big bit of steak, I'm going to imbue you with some of my other, none PC related advice.

Step away from the PC, calm down and stop being so angry at people, being ginger isn’t a bad thing, my daughter is ginger and it’s not a problem..
Being ginger will create one of three types of people,
    1. you will either turn into an angry person that doesn’t have a lot of real friends and you have to take your frustrations out on people, given your probably not a physical person the easiest way for you to do this is via the internet, you'll go on massive rants about how your being bullied or attacked (in this case) to posting blogs etc about how crap/useless/**** other people are and how your putting the world to rights and so on. These are the dangerous ones, these are the ones that blow **** up, self harm and go out and shoot up schools. My suggestion is to go to an MA class where you can take out your anger in a reasonable manor, if you are actually in Glasgow I can recommend the Hybrid Academy of Martial Arts run by George and Mandy.. http://www.hybridama.com/

    2. you will be as hard as ****ing nails, years of being bullied and attacked at school will leave you with a past that started off with you getting your arse kicked but soon turned into you quickly learning how to look after yourself, by the time you hit your mid to late 20's you will have totally chilled out, a teenage life of violence will have taught you self control and how to stay calm and stay out of trouble.

    3. You'll be normal, your ginger, so what, and I’m bald and have a beer belly, it’s just hair ffs, get over it...

So, with all that, said, get out of my thread you ginger northern tight arsed ******..

Re: Looking for a low cost server..

I couldnt be bothered to read through all childish namecalling (no offense those who had a bit of fun out of it, and from what i did read were actually quite articulate about it ;D) so this might hav been mentioned but...

Have you tried Dell outlet? http://www.dell.com/outlet

Returned/refurbished dell stuff which still comes with warrenty etc but at a discount.

Nah, he's full of crap and no doubt when he returns he'll either rant and get permabanned or he'll fire off a load of abusive pm's, and get permabanned..
The fact that he says he's 39 yet talks like he's some sort of wigga coupled with his serious personality disorder throwing insults around and just generally being a cock says that he's single and lonely and just in desperate need of someone to listen to him..

    CPU's not hugely important.
Drive wise it needs two arrays, mirrored for OS and then another array for SQL, preferably on an actual card not chipset pretend RAID..

Will be running SBS2008 Standard x64 and SQL Server 2008 Standard Edition..
Couple of questions before I dive into a spec (although I've a nice P233 server here you can have for £20, therefore its cheap and I knows everyfink about server what nots.....)

How many users are you looking at dropping on the box? Got a rough Idea of how much mail you take a day? Is your antispam cloud based or are you going to be leveraging exchanges built in stuff? Is the box going to be doing any "other" SBS style duties (thinking mainly here of file server duites for main Data / User Docs).

I'd guess you're doing SBS premium (and therefore SQL installed as part of the build) or perhaps you're going take advantage of the virtualisation licence and go with a virtualised SQL instance?

My main worry would on a low spec box would be drive throughput.... Glad to see you're already thinking "proper" raid I'd happily sacrifice CPU speed for drive performance.
