    HSF choice

    Fellas

Im after a new HSF, Ive currently got a Aero 7 lite and its serving me pretty well with my 2600 @ 37'c - 41'c. Problem is its a bit loud and I wouldnt mind getting a better temp.

So what do you recommend for a NF7-s board, a mate of mine suggested the new Zalmans but he had a few probs fixing it past the caps on his NF7-s

    any ideas?

    Thanks in advance

    One of the Thermalright heatsinks?

    SK-7 (80mm fan)
    SLK-800 (80mm fan)
    SLK-900 (92mm fan)
    SP-97 (92mm fan)

With the right fan (or a controller / 7V mod for a normal / noisy one)... Having said that though you could always mod your existing fan (in fact doesn't your heatsink come with a rheostat / pot to slow the fan down?). 37-41 celcius is nothing to worry about (even at idle) though the real measure of a heatsink is how much difference there is between your idle and load temps. It's a shame the Zalman doesn't fit as I can certainly recommend it.

    Edit: just beaten to it!

Or if you're really got cash to burn how about a Swiftech MCX462-V?

the difference between load and idle is 2-4 'c i.e. 4'c if using SETI and 2'c if games, the CPU rarely goes over 45'c

Hard to say to be honest. It's been a long time since I've seen a CPU only increase temp by 4 celcius between load and idle but then I am torturing mine (it's not the best clocker and needs a 1.9V to get up to 9.5 x 220 -- 2.1GHz). What case have you got / how many fans? Also what else are you running in it?

Case is a Coolermaster 710 with 2 front 80mm fans and 2 rear 80mm fans

If you have 48 bucks to spend, definitely go with the SP 97, systemcooling.com has them on sale, down from 58 bucks. My SLK 900A keeps me at a happy 32 C idle with a TTSF2.

I'd be tempted to say that your HSF isn't really up to scratch then (unless you've got a couple of WD raptors in there and a Rad 9800 Pro there's no obvious reason why you should have such a high idle temp - also presuming your XP is a tbred B not A - did the A's go up to 2600+?). Give one of the Thermalrights a go - the order I've listed them in is by price and performance - thermalright's website (www.thermalright.com) should have compatibility listings - the SP97 is compatible (but isn't cheap - especially as you need a fan to go with it - and I'd recommend either getting a fairly high performance fan but pairing it with some kind of controller - so you can pick your ideal temp / noise ratio - or buy a couple of fans - quick / medium / slow so you can decide what you want to settle with)

Well you only have to do that once - there's no maintenance involved. The lower-end Thermalrights use normal clips (SK-7) and there are versions of the SLK800 and SLK900 that only use clips too (the 'A' versions only - SLK800A, SLK900A not the 'U' versions which use the bolt method). A lot of high end heatsinks are bolted to the motherboard as they're all heavy - so if you move the PC you run the risk of breaking the lugs on the CPU socket. It also allows the HSF to use slightly more pressure to contact the CPU which also results in better cooling.

does the aero7 lite come with a speed controller? because the full version is reasonably quiet on the lowest setting, and doesn't cost the earth.
