Don't really know what I'm waiting for, for my main rig as it's got everything i want at the moment.

But I'm about to start building a home server and a couple of HTPC's for when i move into my new house in the next couple of weeks.

SSD prices to come down! Any upgrade beyond that is too much to even contemplate.

After my wifes's reaction to my last upgrade it looks like I'll be waiting for hell to freeze over.

Even endless technobabble to try and make her passive and uninterested is becoming ineffective!

Re: What are you waiting for before your next big upgrade?

A must have game or app that needs the power. The hungriest games I have, still in shrinkwrap, are undoubtedly Fallout 3 and Gothic 3. I don't have any real interest in Crysis and tend to play games a few years behind the curve. When Elder Scrolls 4 comes out I might consider it..

Apps wise something extremely memory hungry could be a push, as my 975 chipset tops out at 8GB. I'm stuck on PCI-e 1.0, USB2 and Firewire 800 too, but that's not a huge problem.

I can't see myself needing to do a big upgrade for at least two years, perhaps even double that.

I won't deny I'm tempted by an SSD at some point, and I've baked my refurbished 8800GTX for a second time, so it's only a matter of time before I need to buy a graphics card upgrade - hopefully it'll fail after 5xxx prices come down, or the 6xxx series are released..

Re: What are you waiting for before your next big upgrade?

Probably when a future version of windows won't run well on this or something fails. I used to change every 18months to 2 years but, last time I left it 5-6 years before upgrading.

I guess I will probably buy an SSD sometime.

I'm waiting till I've finished my studies, so I can drop in a new GPU that will let me game with 3 monitors, or maybe I'll look at the 3D gaming route

Graphics card thats passive that'll be faster than my 4870.
Bare in mind that my 4870 is underclocked (500/500 from 780/1000) so I can run the fan at 20%..

Re: What are you waiting for before your next big upgrade?

Case - A stylish understated aluminium case with USB 3.0 and maybe e-SATA 6Gbps
Mobo - Mini ITX/uATX with Native USB 3 and SATA 6
CPU - Something that will be a significant improvement over my Q6600
Hard Drive - 160GB SSD to get to about £1.20 per GB
GPU - Hoping to ride out DX11 all the way with a 5870 tbh
PSU - 750w antec... no need to change
    Monitor - OLED
Keyboard - Low priority, i just got a G500 and its keeping me happy
Speakers - Saving up to get some decent pro monitors (think genelec 8020)

Re: What are you waiting for before your next big upgrade?

Im actually very content with my PC at the moment. The one thing possibly I would want is a couple more cores - but its more a case of wishing I'd gone for a Q6600 than wanting to put one in now.

Already got a 5850 (Originally 2900XT, then when that broke 8800GT), SSDs and a Blue-ray drive, which were the easy upgrades to this PC, the bulk of which I bought ~3 years ago before I started university.

On Socket 775 and DDR2, so the next upgrade would have to be a massive one, a transition to a new platform with CPU, MB and DDR3 (or beyond?)

Depending on how next platforms are shaping up I might consider a Q6600 or equivalent as a drop in upgrade just to prolong its life as things become more multi threaded (it seems a few people on here are finally shifting theirs)
