Corsair H50 Rad and Fan placement?

    Hiya all,

I have just got a Corsair H50 closed loop cooler for my i5 build and am wondering where the best place to mount the Rad and fan might be? Corsair recommend placing it at the back of the Case with the airflow blowing through the rad into the case (meaning I take out the 120mm exhaust fan that is there at the mo). I have a Coolermaster Stacker 810 case and it currently has 3x 120mm fans that blow air into the case over the harddrives from the front. To my mind there is now going to be warm air heading into the case from both directions in that configuration.

Should I turn the fans round at the front of my case to Expell air perhaps?

Having done a bit of a google on this I have seen that some folks are doing a push/pull system with 2 fans on the Rad, but I am a bit confused as to how this would actually work?
So my question really is does anyone have this cooler and what sort of configuration do you have it in to get the best airflow in the case?

Any help much appreciated as I am fitting it this evening

    Cheers,

    BrOw

Re: Corsair H50 Rad and Fan placement?

best bet would be a top exhaust fan, but it looks like the stacker will only take an 80mm fan in the top. You could mod the case to take a larger top fan, perhaps?

I certainly wouldn't turn the front fans round, as three fans pulling air out of the case would create negative pressute, sucking dust into the case through any unfiltered gap! Also remember that hot air rises, so blowing air out of the lower half of the front of the case is mostly just going to circulate cooler air. You could potentially turn the top one of the front fans round though, although I don't think the airflow through the case would be ideal with that configuration...

Corsair's suggested placement is only really for optimal cooling (it's better to suck cool air from outside the case over the rad, rather than warmer air from inside the case!) so I don't see any issue with just fitting the rad & fan to act as an exhaust, you'll still get good temperatures, just not optimal ones.

The ideal solution, however, would be a good-sized exhaust fan out the top...

Re: Corsair H50 Rad and Fan placement?

So you mean sticking the whole Rad and Fan to the top vent (after taking the dremel to it?) am reluctant to go down that route as yet. I might first off fit it as they recomend and do some testing, then try it with one of the Fans at the front turned round. You got any ideas on this push/pull method with the 2 fans on the rad and how that might work?

Re: Corsair H50 Rad and Fan placement?

No, I meant mounting the rad and fan on the back as advised, then taking a dremel to the roof of the case and mounting a 120mm (or larger!) fan where the 80mm exhaust goes. That will give you a bottom to top airflow which will be assisted by the natural upward flow of the hot air.

Re: Corsair H50 Rad and Fan placement?

Some how I missed the stacker 810 . . . a case that big, ith bottom mounted PSU and they only put a single 80mm fan in the top, and in the middle of the top panel.
What idiot did they get to design that?

An 80mm blow hole makes sense on older cases with a top mounted PSU as there's limited space in the top but not in the layout of the 810

Well enough of that back to the case at hand.

To start with I'd try the h50 out on the back with the fan set to extract air out of the case and see how it performs.
If you're not happy with it then you can try different setups.

Fans in push/pull, basically this is putting a fan on both sides of the rad, one fan pushing air into the rad the other fan pulling air out, it generally increases the air flow through the rad.

setting up the h50 as push pull has on main issue, bolts, the h50 uses imperial size/thread bolts to hold the fans on which can be a bit hard to get hold off in the UK/EU, the main way to set the h50 up push/pull is two only use 2 bolts on each fan on diagonally oppersit corners on each fan, remembering to use opposing holes on the rad so as not to try to thread a bolt into a hole already being used from the other side by the other 2 bolts.
Or get a set of correct threaded bolts that are long enough to go through both of the fans and the rad.

Re: Corsair H50 Rad and Fan placement?

I have my h50 on the front intake fan of my case and one exhaust fan at the back plus a top mounted psu (all fans 120mm) ... basically a standard push pull configuration. I doubled up the fans on my h50 and used the bundled 1700rpm fan as an exhaust fan. Despite the h50 being attached to the ONLY intake hole temperatures are fine. They are same as before ... but bare in mind that the exhaust fan is much higher rpm now and the intake has 2 fans rather than just one. Noise levels haven't increased either!

EDIT: Just noticed pob's bit on setting up the h50 in push pull ... This is rather bizarre, but when I installed the h50 to an AM2+ mobo I had to remove the proprietary bracket and use the bundled h50 one. The screws that held my original motherboard bracket in place seem to have a near identical thread to the h50 ones. So I used those to hold the second fan in place on the h50. The screws are probably about a 1mm too long but if you have a file you can file them down. I have no idea whether I was lucky and it is just my asus mobo that uses those screws or whether it is all AM2+/AM3 motherboards. So if you have a old AM2+ mobo kicking about you can give it a go!

Re: Corsair H50 Rad and Fan placement?

Well guess what folks took out the mobo only to find that one of the pushpins for the heatpipe on the gd65 gets in the way of the backlate placement for five snakes! So am needle file shopping and posting from phone. Though bumped into my mate who can cut me a bigger hole in top of case....will report. Back

Re: Corsair H50 Rad and Fan placement?

Well got the backplate on after taking a couple of mm off the plastic only to find this on top of one of my fans:

    http://forums.hexus.net/corsair-care...ml#post2001957

I have to say that this has to have been one of the most frustrating installations of a cooler I have ever been through (and very nearly ended in tragedy !!!!!)

Am now waiting on a reply from the RMA I sent in on Sunday

Re: Corsair H50 Rad and Fan placement?

Ouch sorry to here about that still corsair are very good on their RMA, sounds like you may of had the original backplate too which was updated.

@c.ruel, umm I wasn't talking about the cpu bracket, I was talking about attaching the 2 fans to the radiator, originally the h50 only came with 4 screws so you could only attach one fan to the radiator
sybrows photo from his leaking thread clearly shows the screws that holds on the fan on the rad

The screw should go all the way through the fan and into the rad.
If you're talking about using the screws from an AM2+/AM3 bracket to go through half the fan, then yes they may well fit as they are an imperial thread (as I found when trying to get replacements for an AM2+ bracket, I had to get a non-threaded backplate and metric nuts&bolts in the end)
However not all AM2+/AM3 brackets have screws, some are non-threaded and use pushpins
Also if you have close cornered fans then you have to have screws long enough to go all the way through the fan.

Re: Corsair H50 Rad and Fan placement?

@pob255 that is what i am talking about!

The screws that hold the default bracket in place on my am2+ mobo are the perfect thread for attaching a second fan to the radiator of the h50.

If I had a camera I would take some photos to show you, as I was really quite surprised ... and lucky!

    EDIT:

Here is a picture of the second fan installed as you can see you were right the screw does not go all the way through both sets of holes.

If you are interested here is a picture of the bracket and backplate that came with my mobo by default.

Please excuse awful image quality, I will try and get a camera!

p.s I release that this probably isn't a great help to the OP but you never know he might have an old AMD mobo kicking about

Re: Corsair H50 Rad and Fan placement?

Yep and look back at the photo from sybrow's leak thread I linked
The screw goes ALL the way through the fan, which is needed if you have closed corner fans.
Also not all am2+/am3 brackets use screws, some are unthreaded and have push pins.

However it is nice to know that the screwed AM2+/AM3 brackets use the same imperial thread as the h50 and the short screws are fine if you're using open cornered fans.
