    Re: Budget i7 build

It's not something that could be improved with a BIOS update, components capable of powering those CPUs would have to be present on the board in the first place. But saying up to 125w then having a 140w CPU in the list is likely just a mistake. Most boards, especially ones meant for OCing, can support much higher wattages than the max TDP they advertise - when you OC (or more specifically over-volt) a CPU you can raise its effective TDP massively.

    Re: Budget i7 build

I'd sooner go for this PSU: http://www.scan.co.uk/products/400w-...mm-fan-atx-12v
The Corsair one would do the job but they've really cheaped out on their CX series and I can't really recommend them.
Wow DDR3 has really dropped in price, hasn't it?

    Re: Budget i7 build

Ooops on the sata 6gbs, but for the planned usage there's no need for it.

Also correct about the wattage still you can use the 95w PhenomII x6 1055T

As to why it cannot use it, probably down to power draw.
Although it's a very tricky subject as cpu's are rated in TDP which is not a measure of current used or heat generated by the cpu but the amount of heat that needs to be dissapated.
So it's next to impossible to know exactly how much a current cpu is drawing.

    Re: Budget i7 build

Thanks to everyone for your help. Received the parts and it's running brilliantly apart from one odd thing... I have added a second hard drive that I had here to add some extra storage and the BIOS/OS won't see it at all! I've tried every SATA socket and am at a loss. I'm sure it's something stupid I've missed but does anyone have any ideas?

The MOBO is the GA-880GMA-UD2H and the drive I'm trying to get to work is a Samsung HD103SJ

    Thanks again.

    Oli

Does it work on another system? Tried another cable? Just not formatted?

    Re: Budget i7 build

Works perfectly in all other systems. It doesn't even *seem* to power up in this one. Tried all SATA slots and still no joy.

CAT in the end I went for the 1100T. Very nice too, thank you for your recommendation

    What PSU did you get??

Did you check the reply I made in your other thread??

It could be that the drive is DOA so as suggested earlier it would be worth trying the drive in another system.

    Re: Budget i7 build

I have tried it in another system, it came out of another system and has since gone back in and still been fine. I'm going to try that firmware update now. Went for the SilverPower PSU in the end.

I assume you got this PSU:

    http://www.scan.co.uk/products/400w-...mm-fan-atx-12v

I know one of my mates had an issue with an earlier Samsung F3 and an 870 motherboard but that was well over six months ago.

What is the date of manufacture listed on the hard drive?

    Re: Budget i7 build

You say it's not powering up at all - you mean you can't hear it spinning up? If so that indicates a power problem rather than data. Check the power connector/try another one.

    Re: Budget i7 build

Right I've got some more info on this, hopefully it helps?

If I just plug power into the drive, it spins up on boot, however with power and the SATA data cable plugged in, nothing!

Has anyone heard of this before?
