That's fair enough, still worth posting for a laugh though.

Hi, I can see from the picture that the CPU comes with the socket, can you tell me if the socket is AM2 or AM3, or what board it came from, I'd like to be able to change the socket in my board if possible as my existing one is just a normal socket 754.

You can't change a socket, that's been torn off a motherboard.

Depends. If it's been carefully removed then you may well be able to solder it back on. It can't be that hard. The solder won't be enough to keep it attached to the board though so be prepared to use some superglue. You may also occasionally get BSOD.

You couldn't manually solder it, it's surface-mounted and you wouldn't be able to access any but the outside pins once it was attached. Besides, it would need to be very good quality soldering and there would be hundreds of tiny connections to make. Realistically, it's impossible.

    Ah, apologies.

It'd be worth trying. If you spread the solder out across all pins and pushed hard when you stick it down then surely at least some of the connections would take? And if that doesn't work then it would be worth putting the mobo on a block of wood, taking some six inch nails and bashing the CPU onto the mobo that way? You might lose some functionality but not that much surely? I mean, come ON! Have some faith!

Re: CPU on ebay - clearly removed from system by an expert

It should be OK as long as you use copper-plated nails.

Again, apologies for missing the point - must have thought I was reading a YT comment or something! xD

Impossible to solder back on for those who don't have bad ass soldering skills like the rest of us.

Re: CPU on ebay - clearly removed from system by an expert

but this talk of using nails and sellotape is just silly. Now if you cover the entire base of the socket with solder and bake it with the MOBO in the oven at 140C for 5 mins, before resting at 70C for 15 - now that will definitely meld the two back together, right...?

Still a fail, as the pins should be in anti static foam or similar when shipped.

    Some of us got it.

Also for thoes who missed the 2nd point, even if you could solder the socket on, you cannot just swap a socket 754 (aka socket A) for an AM2 socket
Ignoring the different number of pins there's still the little matter of the chipset being incompatible.

What you do is wave a hammer over the chipset and say "You naughty chipset! If you don't talk to the nice 'ickle CPU I'm going to have teach you a lesson!" That usually works.
