    Memory for old PC

    I'm trying to buy some more memory for an old computer with ony 64MB currently. However, I don't know if todays memory will work on our 5 year old computer.

    Do you think this will work (I'm going for as cheap an option as possible):

    Ebuyer 256MB DDR266 PC2100 Extra Value RAM

    Thanks

    Also - it is 128 MB needed for windows XP isn't it?

    I think that chances are that the old PC will need SDRAM, not DDR, so that would be incompatible. It should say what the motherboard takes in the manual. Also, even with 128mb, I'd say that Windows XP would still run pretty slowly.

    Right - I'm not sure we'd have a manual for the motherboard because it was brought in a shop already built. Do you know of a way to find out the name of the motherboard, so maybe it'll be on the internet?

    Have a look at the RAM already in the PC. If it has two notches along the connector at the bottom, then it's SD. One should be in the middle, the other half way between that notch and one end. If it has a single notch that's almost in the middle, then it's DDR.

    I'm sure it'll be old SD RAM.

    There are a couple of problems you might come across. Firstly, what size of memory the motherboard can take. Some older motherboards might not see a 256MB stick, and some also can't read double sided RAM. Also, some PC133 sticks aren't liked by older motherboards because of the contents of the SPD chip on them. I've never had a problem, but I've read of others having problems...

    Anyway, I always say 256MB is the minimum for XP - anything less is a joke really. So, my advice is, providing your motherboard does indeed take SD RAM, have a look at the following:

    http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/produ...duct_uid=16422 - a 256MB stick of PC100

    http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Produ...roductID=70579 - a couple of 128MB sticks

    If you can get the name of the motherboard, then www.crucial.com/uk has a memory selector that will (providing the board is listed) list only the RAM that will work in it.

    Is there anyway to find out whether it uses SDRAM or DDR?

    Another way of checking the RAM type would be to use SiSoft Sandra (www.sisoftware.co.uk) or Belarc Advisor (www.belarc.com)
    PHP Code:
    $s = new signature();
    $s->sarcasm()->intellect()->font('Courier New')->display();

    simply what cpu you got?

    k6 - most probably sd
    athlon - sd or ddr, if its slower than 1ghz probably sd
    a64 - ddr
    p4 - sd/ddr/possibly rdram if old (>1.7ghz)
    p3 - almost def sd
    p2 - almost def sd
    p1 - simms/dimms

    check your motherboard manual that wqill tell you, but thats a rough guide

    5 years old, it's going to be SDRAM (p2/p3 era) - PC66, PC100 or PC133.

    you can get ahold of SDRAM from www.crucial.com/uk

    So you think this memory will be more likely to work?

    Ebuyer 256MB PC133 SD Extra Value RAM

    Also - I tried the belarc advisor think on a newer computer, and it only gave the amount of memory. However, it also gave the motherboard, so I'll find what that is, then try to find a manual on the internet.

    Don't forget the crucial website that directhex and I linked to - if you know the motherboard make and model then that site can save a lot of hassle.

    be wary of the ebuyer value stuff, it has a very high defect rate

    I went onto crucial and ran the motherboard through the search, and it came up with the information listed below. However, it also gave some memory to buy, but I think they're all too expensive. Do you know of memory that is as cheap as possible that will work on this board?

    MS-6168
    * 168-pin DIMM Banking: 2 (2 banks of 1)
    * Chipset: Intel 440ZX
    * Error Detection Support: Non-ECC only
    * Max Unbuffered SDR SDRAM: 512MB
    * Module Types Supported: Unbuffered only
    * SDR SDRAM Frequencies: PC66 and PC100
    * Supported DRAM Types: SDR SDRAM only
    * USB Support: 1.x Compliant

    Thanks

    Definately SD ram, Special reserve is the best bet! Check out their web site dedicated to RAM!!

    With a 5 year old PC its probably 100Mhz, might even be 66Mhz!

    as i said, that stuff will plug in etc, but it is HIGHLY likely to be defective & cause constant crashes
