Depends on what you expect it to do......

Standard office apps and browsing - S/H or low end spec laptop.

The above + Gaming = Big bucks.

Whats your price range? You dont really want to be spending big money on a system thats primaraly for UNI. Im going to uni and ill be doing a computer based degree, so a laptop is almost essential, so ive been thinking of the kind of one i may get or consider. These are a few firm thoughts ive had..

Needs a long battery live, for this reason i wouldnt have anything less than a Pentium M CPU with the 855 chipset, it doesnt have to be centrino based and it doesnt need to be the fastest in terms of Ghz (say 1.7 gig ).

Id have 512mb ram along with a minimum of 30gig hard disk space spinning at 5400rpm or faster, depending on price note: the faster it spins the quicker the battery drain (my common sence tells me), so keep that in mind.
As for the graphics i personally wouldnt mind a Mradeon 9600, if they are too expensive then you could go for a Mradeon 9000. (i dont know much about the Nvidia alternatives so i wont mention them) I dont like the idea of graphics shareing the system memory either. If i have 512MB Ram it should be for the system to utilize and not the graphics. Im not sure on this (correct me if im wrong, as with anything else in this post) but i dont think any of the Mobile Radeons share system memory.

As for the optical drive, most laptops these days have some sort of DVD play i think and its quite common to have a built in CD-RW to i think, DVD-Burners on a laptop arn't nessisary for uni type of stuff i dont think, the price is bumped up with this any way.

Hope this helps you in some way. Prahaps the system ive described is a tad on the powerful side for what you may want it for, but this is what im currently considering. I hope my thoughts on the type of system im considering will help you with what you need

i have a toshiba satellite pro A10. It cost £550 from dabs and its fantastic. Fast enough for photoshop etc (altho need more ram - which i WILL buy), and plays games at v low quality, but good for multiplayer ut in school. The keybord is a bit flexible but perfectly comfortable to type on.

If your looking for summit cheap this was a similar price ot an old p3 compaq a local retailler was selling. BUY ONE IF IT SUITS YOU
