PCI is out, but it will take a year or two for it to become worth while and developto the standard AGP is now.

ok - this is where it gets interesting

I was looking at an intel P4 extreme edition with 800 MHZ FSB - does this mean FSB on the CPU or you need 800 mhz FSB on the board (obviously) to run it ??

I was also looking at the socket 939 FX53 on overclockers.co.uk - and they appear to be clocked at 2.4 ghz ?????? that sounds a bit slow ? and the faster chip is cheaper than the slower one ???

Questions: for the games which is the btter

the FX or the Extreme eddition

Why are the AMD's clocked so slow ?

If you get a chip of this standard you'll need to make sure you get a motherboard that will support and make the most of it and also make the most of the best ram.

    Suggestions please....

I would recomend the p4 extreame! but I'm an intel fan! the rest will recomend the FX... The p4 is better at media and encoding.... the fx is better at gaming.. but its the extreame that has the 2 meg L3 Cache!

    What are the price differences?

Games won't take full advantage of either processor for a while i wouldn't think :S

    Intel Pentium 4/ 3.2 GHz Extreme Edition 800MHz FSB, 2MB L3 Cache $900.00

    AMD Socket 939 Athlon 64 FX-53, 1MB L2 Cache, Windows Compatible 64-bit Processor $869.00

Notice the intel has a 2 meg as the amd has only a one!

& the FX will still eat it - what's your point?

    ikonia,
The AMDs have a slower clock speed than the Intel but because of their different architecture they do more instructions per cycle.

It's a bit like having 2 cars that both do the same top speed but 1 uses a slow revving V8 & 1 uses a high revving 4 pot

    interesting analergy.

I'd be very interested at seeing the FX chip compared to the top spec AMD (non FX) 3.xxxx GHZ and the Intel P4

I think games will take advantage of most of whats there - hence why I'm getting an updated machine as some games are thrashing my CPU - I just think it thrashes it for a milisecond as opposed to 3 seconds, but I take the point about it not using the 64bit and a few tweaks of the chip.

Keeping with the engine comparision, I completly see what your saying, but surly the V8 (intel) will come into its own when its getting a thrashing as the more "torquey" CPU ?

    I don't know - hence why I am asking.

I saw a comparison in maximum pc mag... It compared them all! Intel P$ extream won 75% or more of the benchmarks!!! but thats due to the 2 meg L3

myth, everyone here now already knows about your Intel fanboy opinions, so there's not much need to keep repeating yourself.

ikonia, if money isn't a problem then get the FX53 and if you really can push it, get 2Gb worth of ram.

    hmmm... "Fanboy"

No! I belive in scores, reports and benchmarks! Yes amd is great! they have lower clock speeds but do more per cycle! I have no problem with this! I have considered an AMD system for my new gaming rig.. but I need to wait for atleast an 16x AGP and DDR 2... Mobo.. I recomend Intel for the GIANT L3!

And I don't like being "BRANDED" Fanboy! I have no favs! If I could trade this mobo and proc for an AMD socket 939 I'd go for it!!!!!

The point is that shedloads of cache doesn't actually make a difference, neither does DDR2 or PCI extreme at the moment.

Errr the cache does make a difference allbet small but still a difference in certain things.

I would say the AMD is the v8 tbh it does more work with wat it has got where has the intel just seems to try and shove raw power at a problem.

    A VERY interesintg read.

It surprises me that a 2.4ghz processesor (all beit a different arch) destroys 3.X ghz processes so easy.

I think the AMD is looking odds on fav for me to buy
