    Question Sony Digital Camera

Hey guys just wondering what your thoughts are on this particular digital camera, in most retailer stores the final price is about £250

    Sony DSCW1 Digital Camera

I think its a good deal, but then im probably been pulled in by them doing a £100 reduction on this item.

Its pretty top notch specs, outdoing other cameras around the same price range.

go ahead lash out at it

It's a great camera, sold tonnes of them during this Christmas season. The picture quality off of it is just mind boggling. We can print the photo's off of the LP2000C without having to make any adjustments. Plus the 2.5 inch LCD is nice. Though the price seems kind of steep, I was selling it for $429 CAD.

It's £201 at Pixmania, though they'll need to know who you slept with last week before they send it to you. Amazon sell it for £219 but you get free delivery.

I was looking at this camera but decided on the Canon Powershot A95 in the end. It generally seemed to just edge the Sony in picture quality (can't compare but the Canon is excellent), but it had two distinct advantages: It uses AA batteries rather than proprietary ones, and it has the ability to add telephoto & fisheye lenses. Also the movable screen is a good idea as it keeps it safe from scratches.

Sony are without doubt a fantastic electronics company, they make great stereos, they make great Tv's they make great lots of things, but they are not cameras in my opinion.

If you are looking for quality you NEED to look at the main traditional companies, such as Canon, Nikon, Olympus, Pentax Fuji and the like, do not look at an electronics company.

In the computer world, they say rubbish in = rubbish out the same applies to photography, the lens is the MOST important part of a camera, if you cannot see the subject clearly you will never get a good picture!

Thats why I say go for a reputable PHOTOGRAPHIC company, if you want small my preference is the Pentax optio range, however there is also the Canon Ixus range available.

If you want inexpensive and a bit of everything including fairly high quality, the Fuji range is hard to beat.

Olympus are in my opinion, (and the opinion of many far cleverer people than me) probably the best non DSLR cameras available in many respects, but you will not find Sony in any list I put together.....sorry.

The A-95 honestly has nothing on the the W1... the W1 has incredible picture quality, largely because of the carl zeiss lens.

Sorry Apex, I gotta disagree. Been selling these for 4 years and the sony W1 is one of the nicest camera's I have ever seen. And like I said the Carl Zeiss lens is great. As for the pentax's, get one if you want, but I'll avoid them myself. I never enjoy sending my camera's in for warranty work.

    In reply to #8...

Yeah it probably does seems steep in price to you, most things in the uk are overly high in price compared to other countries, America imparticularly.

One of the utmost reasons i want to leave this country along with the weather.

I find the picture quality of Sony cameras to be worse than most of the cameras made by "proper" photography companies like Fuji, Nikon, Pentax, Canon, Olympus... etc, and those are the only manufacturers I'd consider.

Sony are by no means crap (Kodak however... :| ) but there is better value to be had elsewhere.
