The 3M surface certainly works with the MX1000, but it wasn't to my taste. It isn't that the mouse drags, it just doesn't "glide", if you know what I mean. I'm sure some people would love it. If found my bare desk suited me better.
Also the 3M was quite loud when used with a razer Boomslang - made a scratchy sound. How is it with the Diamondback?
I was thinking the same about chopping boards. Maybe too thick, but if they're wide enough I guess that doesn't matter.

    Rajagra,
You're right that the mouse doesn't exactly glide on a 3M, but there does appear to be consistent resistance, rather than with some mousemats, where you need an initial extra force to overcome the inertia and then if not checked the mouse slightly skids further than you meant it to. On the 3M, this means that small movements are very easy and accurate.
Scratchy sound is too low to hear when game sound is on. And whatever low friction pads are on the Diamondback are definitely slicker than on the MX700.
The mat has got quite dirty (sort of gritty, which doesn't go no matter how much you try and brush it off with your hand), but I'm reluctant to clean it as the dirt maybe the only thing holding it together.
If you try out the glass chopping board, might be an idea to put some sort of padding around the edge, as it could be very uncomfortable if the heel of your hand bangs into some tempered glass!
I just remembered that I did look into smooth surfaces for woodworking tool sharpening. Some other potential surfaces might be marble or granite. Might be able to pick up a cheap marble board from a charidee shop - the boards were all the rage a few years ago and then people realised that they blunt knives in double quick time. I don't suppose there have been many commercial solutions using those materials! But that's the beauty of value added home customisation - you can produce DIY one-off solutions that would be economically unviable, whether by cost of materials, cost of shipping, or excessive production time, for even mass production.
Let us know if you experiment.
    Cheers

Have you seen the latest granite mouse mats? They rock!

    Hello
    Done some experimenting me!
    Mousemat material: Granite vs Glass
    Granite
'Sperimenting with a Razer Diamondback and a very first edition MS optical jobbie, using granite as a mousing surface is just about perfect! I was hoping that the granite would be a bit more cooling to my frenetic, hot hands, but it just stays the cool side of warm. Very smooth, precise and quiet. The old MSmouse sounded a bit scratchy, but that's 'cos one of its rubber feet is missing.
    Glass
Didn't work at all. Maybe the glass was too thick? Even holding something detailed right up against the glass still resulted in complete and utter mouse pointer movement failure.

    I didn't test a gonadic mouse.

BTW I was thinking of going on Ebay and conning people with selling granite mousemats, but I'll come clean - they are granite placemats from a BHS clearance sale! The dimensions are 30cm x 21cm - just about the same size as some of the big glass mouse mats (you know, the ones that do work). They've got thin bits of rubber glued to each corner to stop slippage - also makes it a bit easier to lift off the desk, than if it was flat.
Cost £6 pack of 2. There were some left in Brighton BHS on the 4th April -none in Croydon. I think that the sales assistant in Brighton looked a little bit scared when I told him what I was going to use them for!

Yep, too thick. My MS wireless optical mouse would not work with my Icemat. I am told (by icemat) that it's due to weeker optical signals with some wireless mice. My MX1000 works like a dream on it. See my review here...

I used the MX1000 for a day or two and couldn't stand the downgrade in games (over the MX300) ... didn't like the razer 1600dpi mouse either ... 518 might look good

    http://www.logitech.co.uk/index.cfm/...ONTENTID=10121

... but f00k that where's the corded lazer mouse ... I even emailled logi about it before xmas stating how they are losing sales to Razer for being so short-sighted ... there are a lot of gamers that still know the benefits of corded goodness

bring on the MX6x series if that's the guise of the corded lazer

btw I've had a func 1030 for 4 and half years now and it's still going strong ... I've tested countless mats in between and nothing has usurped the power of the func

doh, just looked for it myself, they must have stopped doing them after their recent move. shame a mate bought one only a few weeks ago sorry

i'd go for the mx518 as i dont lke the shape of the mx1000 (personal thing) and the little lag where it goes to sleep and wakes up, i know noone likes a camper, but we all play sniper occcasionally eh?

To be honest with you, i think if this mat is for a gamer then it realy depends on personal preference over all and by that i mean high/low sensitivity big/small size rough/smooth etc.

A few good names to look at would be:
    Func
    Corepad
    Icemat
    Everglide

I would write a description of each of their mats but that would be tiresome and i have not got all of their mats to test. Check them out before you buy anyway.
