Arctic Cooling NV5 for 6800 series cards..

I was thinking of using a pair of these coolers in an SLI setup with two XFX 6800GT's on the Asus AN8 SLI board.

    http://www.thecoolingshop.com/produc...oducts_id/1133
(although not at that price )

Does anyone know if the design draws air in from outside, or exhausts hot air out? The cooler's exhaust arrangement takes up the case backplane space next to the VGA card it's attached to - I'm presuming that there is sufficient clearance for this kind of setup on the mobo, but also figure that the PCI slot next to the second PCI-E slot would be out of action?
Can anyone with the AN8SLI confirm this?

Do you think they're worth it?
And also, how easy is it to remove the stock cooling solution from the XFX cards? Will there be lots of factory thermal/adhesive pad to remove and potential to break things?

    Many thanks,
    S.

There is a guide to doing that in the feb issue of computer shopper, look on www.computershopper.co.uk or just google for another guide.

i think it is important for you to note that the center of the fan on the NV Coolers stick out, so its like taking 1.5 PCI slots
ill post some pics in a moment

forgive me for the terrible pic quality, this camera phone is the only camera i got

the asus SLI mobo has 2PCI express spaces between the 2 PCIe x16 slots, so i guess theyll do juz fine
whatever card u put on the only PCI express slot on ur mobo must not be long, as it will hit the center of the fan that bulges out

and yea, its worth the money, much much quiter... and a few Cs cooler

Arse. This means I end up with only one useable PCI slot?! I've just ordered two NV5 coolers, but I've got 2 PCI cards I need top plug in, so I guess I'm cancelling the order!

    Pics appreciated..

    I have a:

SoundBlaster Live (soon to be replaced with Audigy2ZS)
    Yamaha SW1000XG Audioboard
And was considering the Adaptec 2410SA RAID card

Are you saying by the 'Half a PCI slot' that there's room for one as long as it doesn't have things on the back of the PCB?

I got a good deal on the NV5's, but still £20 for a pair if I can't use them sucks!

    Your thoughts much appreciated!

Also watch out if your card has a dual slot backplate, ive had to take the backplate off mine to fit it.

    Thanks for the info guys..
As I said, I've been looking at the XFX 6800GT cards, which are only single backplate.. Luckily.

I guess I'll build the system and see what I get from stock fans, noise and temp wise, and RMA the NV5's if don't need them. Shame, but I NEEEED my PCI slots!

Silon: In ur pic, I presume there is a a PCI slot hidden under the cooler, as well as the one that is _partially_ obstructed that you've marked in blue? Obviously I can't say for sure, but it doesn't look like it's eating too much of that PCI slot u've marked, and should take a longer PCI card as long as it has no components on it's rear side?
    What would be ur opinion?

My AN8 will hopefully turn up tomorrow, but the pair of 6800GT's will be the last thing I order, so I won't be able to confirm any of this myself, for a fair while.

Many many thanks for all your views, keep em coming,
    S.

I have the a8n sli deluxe (well im rma'ing it today , hopefully swapping for the new dfi) , just done some measuring and if your pci card isn't longer than 13.5cm then it won't obstruct the fan on the nv silencer. Youll probably be worse off if you use the stock cooler as the fan is near the center and although the card is shallower and it won't touch the pci card it will block airflow.
You'll be waiting a long time fro the 6800gt's their like gold dust! took me 2 months to find one.

    Why are you RMA'ing it?

Thanks for the measure up - I'll have to get home and look at my PCI cards now! Good point about the stock cooler/air flow..

There are quite a few places with the 6800GT's in stock, but only the overpriced Doom3 bundle, so I'm sitting quiet for a while and making them the last thing - as their also the one thing that's definitely going on the Credit Card! lol..

One of the memory slots stopped working, on closer inspection it seems to have burnt out, also voltage control is screwy, has problems detecting maxtor sata drives and doesn't go over 240mhz memory @1T.
Who's got the 6800gt's in stock? I can't see any.

    im flat broke after mine,

    a64 3200+
    sli deluxe
    leadtek 6800gt
    1gb ocx rev 2 platinum
    3* 250gb maxtor 16mb cache sata's
    soundblaster audigy zs platinum.

looks like bread and water for a while

yeap...like what pudds said, only if ur card is so long that it hits the 'ball' at the center of the fan that bulges out.....but even then, if it doesnt touch the 'ball' [like juz short of touching it] it will still block a *little* air into the fan...

i know that an Audigy2Zs certainly wont make it it will definatly hit the ball... [i have one juz below my gcard... i can easily see it]

How much voltage were you giving the memory?

They draw air in at fan end and exhaust at the PCI slot end, although some earlier models were flawed in that they drew air IN through the back and then out the fan, due to the fan spinning the wrong way :/

Mine does it, and i'm looking for a solution

Anything up to 3volts, its a known problem with the board.
