    Floppy disk drive noises!

    Hello,

I gather that some people don't bother with floppy disk drives anymore but I was wondering if I could get some info from people who do?

Does anyone experience noises from the drive (I'm guessing it trying to access) when shutting down the computer or when starting up into windows? What about when loading a game.

When I shut down the computer it seems to make an amazing amount of noise

I know I can always remove it but I just wondered if other people have had similar problems.

    Regards

This is most likely an application in Windows checking to see if there is a Floppy in the drive. Whatever the reason, the light will illuminate for around 7 seconds, and make a 'ch.chonk' or 'ch.der.ch.der.ch.der' noise..

An app that immediately springs to mind is Norton Antivirus, certainly on the Corporate edition and I'm guessing on the home versions too, will check on Startup/Shutdown/Whenevertheyfeellikeit for the presence of a floppy disc.

In fact, Norton AVCE won't shutdown or logoff Windows if there IS a floppy in the drive.

FWIW, Sony (rebadge) and Mitsumi 3.5" floppy drives tend to be the quietest in operation, but as you point out, floppy is an ageing technology and for the most part you'll just have to live with it, or lose it..

Ahh, that explains it then. I do have Aorton Anti Virus. So I guess its checking!

Yeah floppy is an ageing technology, I guess it still has its uses for now.

I was just wondering if it was normal, I guess it is.

I think floppy is still very much alive, there are somethings that necessate the use of a floppy, and to me, i wont be going without it anytime soon!

Personally I dispise floppy drives, CD/DVDRW has completely trashed it as a backup/transportation medium. My only current use for my floppy drive now is for my RAID drivers, only because Microsoft hasn't given us any other choice other than modifying the windows xp cd. and when i get enough time to monkey around with that i'll do it for sure.
