Just installed my nf7 board and xp2400 chip with the standard heatsink and fan(witht therman pad).
After instaling xp i get about 42-43 at idle and when unraring large files its gone upto 47. Not tried games yet.
Is this ok?

this is with the side of the case off btw aswell.
A better heatsink / fan should definitely be able to lower your temps (and so might better case cooling) but they're nothing to panic about. If you want a good idea of just how hot it can get try torture testing with prime95 for an hour or so:

Edit: Just for something to compare it to my XP-M 2500+ idles around the mid 40s but it's also running @ 2.4GHz (about 3400+ level if such a chip existed) and needs 1.9V to stay stable at that speed. My HSF is a Zalman 7000B AlCu:

And my case (Lian Li PC61) has 2 80mm intake and 2 80m exhaust fans. And that's with the case closed not open. Obviously another big variable is hot warm the room is that the PC sits in...

Ill probably get a better heatsink and fan. I panic alot you see, dont want y equipment damaged and woldnt mind overclocking slightly if i could.
what your reckin it wil go up to playing games?
Unraring is pretty CPU intensive... While playing games the case temp will go up because the GFX card is being worked hard too... Prime 95 over an hour or so will get the CPU about as warm as it can get - as long as it isn't hitting 60 or so I wouldn't worry about it too much.
As for a new HSF the Zalman is good. Thermalrights are great. What case cooling do you have?
i had taken my 2400 out of my old motherboard. should i of re-applied thermal paste?
I really want to get teh temps down so that ican overclock, or just be safe.
whats the best way for removing the remainder of the thermal pad both on the cpu and heatsink if i decide to add re-apply

If not - it's not too hot.
If yes - get a better HSF.
MBM temps are very inaccurate (think +/-10C) so I wouldn't get too panicked over a mid 40s reading.
my Xp2400 was running under a stock (all alu) Coolermaster HSF, terrible HS, with some crap paste underneath and ran at about the same.
i remember 42 idle and about 49 load, i think i remember it going to 53 once too.
they are safe to well over 60 though so i wouldnt worry.
By comparison my A64 3400 is extremely cool, primes at 40 and idles at around 34
EDIT: and white spirit gets that paste right off, stinks though. IMO does a better job than the Akasa TIM cleaner i have now, except the tim cleaner can be used in my bedroom without me poisoning myself.
I used to run a Tbred-A at 63C, 24/7. It was overcloked by 25% and running Find a Drug. It was perfectly Prime stable at that temp. I installed a Coolermaster X-Dream after a couple of months which dropped the load temps to about 55C and it ran for about 18 months like that.
Running Dual MP 2400+ here (basically the same chip). 43 C on load (F@H) using Qtec Silent HSF (copper + aluminium). I would say your temp is fine and you should be able to lower it using better HSF.
White spirit leaves an oily residue though. If you use it you should wipe down the area with meths or isopropanol afterwards to remove that. Also I wouldn't recommend using white spirit on a CPU as it's quite a harsh solvent and may cause damage (heatsink is ok as it's just a chunk of metal).Originally Posted by [DW]Cougho
Never tried these "TIM cleaners" they sound like a way of repackaging standard solvents to rip people off. I just use isopropanol and it works.
On Abit NF7's at least, the boot temp has about +4 added as an ofset. On mine when you boot initially and leave it to run for a bit it'll get to 46c and sit there and fall back to it after intensive, however when you re-boot it'll then read 42c and stay there and drop back there after running intensive, by all accounts it's embeded in the bios
My 2500+ is sitting here doing 2.2Ghz at 45.5C, with 1.73v jammed through it.
