Mobby-dick- Is ebueyr value ram any good? Wouldn't want to suffer from bsod every now and then due to cheap mem (reviews seem neutral).

very true - I will pay more attention in future

as an intresting comparison , the standard machines I buy for cleints tend to be HP/Compaq Dx2000's which come in at around £350 ex vat I think for a p4 2.8 /256 /40Gb

Thats the key, VAT adds a lot of £££ on the bill. You could get a very good config for £420 inc vat.

his clients presumably reclaim the VAT anyway.
    & iirc it's 100% write-off for IT hardware still?

I believe so - VAT really only counts when you sell to the consumer.

I'm not looking to rip-off anyone, just want to build a nice little PC and sell it for any profit really (£10-£200 whatever) this is just for fun

Getting a Pentium is a good idea as even people who don't know anything about PCs will think its good because of this.

So.. PIII / cheap board / 256MB (RELIABLE!) should handle most stuff apart from new PC games / 40GB HDD should be enough / super cheap case with lots of jewelry / cheap CD/RW / floppyDD / cheap PSU... am I forgetting somthing?
Only thing then is what to put on it... Open Office is free ... and then just put a copy of my win2000 OS on a partition?? ...bit of free antivirus and firewall (any suggestions plz) update it all through my connection so its ready to go when they get it home!

Am going to get the weekly rag today, see how many are selling - worst comes to worst I'll have a backup PC

One more thing: Second hand? or Brand new...?
I was thinking 2nd hand of Ebay... what do you guys think.. newer safer?

don't forget that for the common bum, higher numbers = better, so it would definately be best to get Celerons instead of Athlons
