Have you MSI Afterburner installed with the Riva Statistics Server?

You can monitor core/thread usage in game:
    https://www.howtogeek.com/692420/how...i-afterburner/

    Should show clockspeeds,etc.

Also, what TDP setting is your CPU at? If it is at the stock 65W TDP,the CPU will most likely not boost very high.

Never used it to be honest, either of them.

I do indeed have a 65w cpu, im not keen on getting a 125w etc just because i dont think i "need" it although its something i have thought about!

im going to do some research to understand exactly what im looking for on msi afterburner and this Riva Statistics Server thing

It will make the CPU boost much higher. I run my Core i5 10400 at around 80W IIRC,so you don't need to run it at 125W.

Hm i have forgotten the last time i messed with OC'in so not sure id be able to do it (think back to core 2 duo days when i last did it)

Confident enough to know my way around a bios i mean i upgrade re flash etc all the time on broken boards.

But abit weary with this being my main rig, more to loose if something goes wrong and i change a setting that kills it!

I am sat on a b460 chipset so unsure if i can actually do much overclocking anyway, i am still on the fench but looking at lots of different options makes it that bit harder, i consider how my system will bring back around £200 once sold so in theory i am not spending much upgrading just the motherboard and CPU.

So with that i have been looking at these options,

If i go with alder lake i would Probaly go for a i5 12400 with a b660M motherboard - it gives me everything i want and i feel the cost doesnt justify the 12600 over the 12400 (i wont bother with K versions)

If i went with Rocket Lake i would go with a z590 (msi on sale currently at scan for about £150) and pair this with a 11600K again because cost allows it and id get the CPU second hand for about £150

So Alder lake will cost me approx £160 for the motherboard and £170 for CPU
Rocket Lake would cost me £150 for motherboard and £150-£160 for CPU

Now can you see why im stuck? the cost difference isnt much and consider i will make £200 back....so.....stuck, again!

I wish I had £1 for every time I've said "... but it only costs £x to do ....". I reckon it would pay for a whole new PC.

So yeah, I sure see why.

The problem is, it then only costs £y to do whatever's next.

I once "only costs" from a 4-year old used 328i (that I started out deciding to get) to a brand new BMW M3 doing that. It only cost £x to do nicer wheels, £y to do air-con, £z to do leather, etc. Aw hell, why not just ....

What made me really nervous was a brand new Aston I saw parked up. I bought the Beemer before I could "just pop in for a look".

Well from what i can see it would benefit me going to alder lake, and if i can get a 12400 for cheap...(less than £150) i think it might well be worth it purely based on the fact its an easy upgrade which i can later drop a better cpu in and still have perks i dont have now...at least thats my thoughts right now ha

The rationale seems sound enough. I'd already done a couple of "it's just" stages and ended up at 5900X as probably the best base point for me. I flirted with 12th Gen (probably 12700K though the 12600K looks temptingly close. Two things put me off .... well, maybe three. The first is simply that it's new Gen. That always makes me nervous and Jayztwocents comments about his experiences didn't help. The third (I'll come back to second) was performance/watt. The second, and it's a big one for me, is it pretty much forces a Win10 to Win11 upgrade on me and I'm NOT happy about that. Next Gen Ryzen may well do too, especially for DDR5 and/or latest PCIe gen support.

I'm not wildly happy to have some of what I do strong-armed off W7 to W10, and there are sure things I dislike about W11. As my plan is my next PC will probably be my last, I want to at least preserve the option of staying with Win10 on it. Given that it's intended to be the last time, and that it's more about photo, video and sound than gaming, the "it's just" factor is pretty minor. I'd rather go further than I otherwise would, now, than do it all again in a couple/few years and it costing a bit more p-front, ho-hum. It's very much a horses for courses thing though. It happens to suit my circumstances to do it this way but if my circumstances were different, my solution would be too.

It's taken a lot of flirting wth this option, flirting with that, researching the implications etc, and then some time to let each option sink in, before I got to feel .... comfortable .... with where I ended up. I'm now just sorting out bells and whistles (case choice, cooling etc) and then, when I get a break in the rate of non-PC stuff to sort out and do a build, order and do it. That could be days, or months.

I sympathise with the .... journey .... you're on. This stuff, if you're not current with it (and I'm not) is complicated.
