Hardware that breaks

For me video cards and optical drives die the most and hard drives the least.

I'm really wondering what some of you people do to your drives if they fail this often. I have had a single drive out of more than 20 die in my life time. I have hard drives that are over a 12 years old that still work fine.

Of all the hundreds of pc bits I've bought in the last 10 or so years, the only thing I've had go pop are hard drives. 5 of the buggers.

In my case its close between RAM and Hard Drives, but i think Ram has the slight faliure average. I work in I.T so we go through a lot of RAM and Drive.

At work it's PSU's & hard drives that have the biggest failure rate. But personally i seem to get thro a lot of opticl drives.

I had the original die about 7 months after purchase, the 2nd died roughly 22 months into the warranty and the 3rd lasted just 10 weeks and this took me out of the 2 year warranty period.

Talk about gutted... so to cheer myself up I ended up buying a SKT 939 system instead with PCI-E and 2 x 6800GT's

I voted "Other", and that for me is Software!

I know it's a hardware poll, but the only thing that I've had "break" in the past god knows how many years of building PC's is my monitor that went recently. Every other problem I have is down to Windows.

I can bet that HDD's is gonna be the most popular though...

IIRC it was an nvidia pre-release sample actually.

Well the only thing I've ever managed top kill was the motherboard in my SN45G, stupid bug with changing the memory voltage.

Its the hard drive, I always try and upgrade, add remove, generally mess about with my system when Im intoxicated, and end up dropping them on the floor and bam ! Ive lost about 5 hard drives in the last year due to this :\

But surely that comes under "User error" rather than "Broken Hardware"!

Would you class a pint glass as faulty if it broke when you dropped it?

3 sticks of ddr ram in a matter of months

Hard drives fail a lot but I've had just as many power supplies fail as hard drives. Are we talking new builds or machines that have been in service more than a year? There's a big difference.
