P4 3.2Ghz temp question?

I am not really to sure about this so I thought I had better ask in this part of the forum. Since switching to a dual monitor display my cpu seems to be under slightly more load. I normally crunch numbers with the UD hexus team but my CPU is showing up as 55c with the cpu load at about 60% Is this far to hot?

Is it a Prescott or a Northwood ??

If it's a Northwood it's a tad warm but ambient air temp, case cooling come into play there, if it's a Prescott it's fine.

If its a northwood it could be slightly hot, if you have an Abit motherboard don't worry about it as they read the temps a little higher than other boards. The reason why both myself and Anzac are getting decent temps is that we are running the Asus P4C800 E Deluxe motherboards which are nortorious for reading temps of the CPU well below normal, so infact not a true temp reading. My 3.2 P4 Northwood hits around 27c idle and 38@ load on that board, now if you have a prescott then your temps will be alright.

My 3.2 northwood here @ work lives at full load 24/7 at abt 55-65C. Has done for well over a year. As do the other 3 3.2 Nortwoods under my domain. Never a glitch. And that's o/clocked to 3.6GHz.

Okay it is a Northwood, might give UD crunching a miss until I move over to a new processor.

I personally don't think it's too much to worry about. Nonr of our nortwoods hav a prob runnign at those temps on a permenant basis.

Will running at that temp, shorten its life?

It may well do, but imo mid 50's C is not exactly excessive per-se.

One of the first 3.2 Northwoods, got it, overclocked it, left it running 24/7/365. Used to Boinc, but now UD's.
