    Dual Core ?

Im in the process of pricing up my next PC and was after a bit of advice. Was looking at using the AMD 4000+ as my cpu but then found the dual core 4200+ for only £40 more. Is it worth going dual core at this time ? Gonna be purly a gaming rig , cheers

Probly not if it's a pure gaming rig, but it's nice having a dual core. I got mine for 380quid. so i thought why not.

Yes, maybe worth ignoring places like this that i for one have never heard of with prices almost too good to be true.

7800 for £336 inc It has got a bricks and mortar address and contact number normally a good sign. Seems a little too cheap though

Dam, that site has some awesome prices.

You have to flash the BIOS for it to properly recognise dual core.

A 3700+ will kick the crap out of a 4200+ in games, especially if you overclock. With the same cooling the 3700+ will run over 300MHz higher than the 4200+ and has 1MB of L2 cache which is much better for gaming and 3D benching.

Basically, the 3700+ is a better gaming and enthusiast chip, while the 4200+ is better for multitasking power-users and video/audio work.

Of course many people only want to sound impressive, so the dual-core (being the new thing) has more of an "oooooooohhhhhhh" factor.

Surely the 4400+ Will kick the ass of games in the coming 6-9 months?

    1MB of cache per core.

And UE3 will be multi core compatable and since the PS3 is going to be multicore it will be easier for developers to develop for multicore and port to PC.

Yes, there's a move to multi-threaded game development being speared on by the next-generation consoles, but I wouldn't like to say 6-9 months, or even a year, as the timeline for truly seeing the benefits.

That said, the X2 is the better all-round CPU by far, with the usual caveat of it's not the fastest processor family around for current non-multi-threaded applications.

If you plan on keeping the CPU for the next couple of years, the X2 is the much better processor. Mild overclocking will extend its later life usefulness, too.
