Because that leaves him with the old card. Much better to upgrade graphics now and then save up a big chunk for an all in one upgrade!

I didn't think that Sapphire made nVidia cards?

Anyway, I would go for the X800XL, but that's more personal preference - I think the performance is pretty similar between the two. I just prefer ATi drivers.

    - Tagan TG480-U01
    - Asus A8V Deluxe
    - Sapphire Radeon 9800 pro
    - 3000 AMD Winchester
    - 512mb DDR PC3200 x 2 (generic scan.co.uk memory)

Should I go for an SLI mboard and a new graphics card but keep the chip? Or just replace the card?

All help will be VERY appreciated..
Buy a new 939skt mobo and change the Graphics Card. All the other stuff is fien for the time being.

well just my 2nd 2 cents. I have an x800xl and can heavily recommend it. Until teh next unreal engine games etc come out (x360 time) and we all need shader 3 that is........ *groan*

edit; this is to jonny below. I wonder if he will read this lol. Well anyway i think the bottleneck in that system is the GPU and you should see if you can upgrade it cause your winchester really is pretty fast.

I have a very similar system (3000+ Winchester, 9800Pro, 1Gb Ram) and I'm thinking of upping the whole lot. It gives good performance but as soon as I put a new component in, it will be held back (in perfomance) by something else. I know this will always be true, but more so in my rig, which I believe is a rougly even standard across the board.

Jonny: thats exactly what the problem is with my rig: its reasonably fine as it is (Battlefield 2: WOW!), but any upgrades I think of doing are held back by the rest of the system: if I upgrade the mobo then I have to upgrade the GPU as well as theres no point in getting a mobo with AGP! If I upgrade the chip then I might as well upgrade the GPU as well.. Everobody with reasonable systems but without PCI-E I think are in the same boat the moment..

I've come to the conclusion that I can upgrade the card now and spend a little less than I budgeted, and then next year go for the BIG upgrade: mobo + chip + card + ram...

Mike W: you're right.. I meant to say the X800XL
