Athlon A64 Venice vs. San Diego

It sounds like there is a very diverse opinions about these cpu's.

At the moment though, i'm slightly more on the Venice side than San Diego, as it does not sound like there are very big advantages compared to performance/value. It might not be a big price difference, but still a bit for me. As i'm planning to upgrade at some point in the future and for new im sure 3500+ will do wonders for me (as im only using on Pentium2 350Mhz right now!)

I'd get the San diego.. because In my head.. "it's only another £30, so whatthehell"
+ I was torn between the two when I was deciding on my upgrade a few weeks ago and I decided on the San diego.. that was until I got engaged.. so my upgrade money has been re-allocated for now

Are the newer venices overclocking well again? I've got a week 20 3200 and it's pretty useless for overclocking.

I've just started playing with my San Diego 3700+ I bought quite a few months back.
I've been running it at stock speeds, but thought I'd start experimenting this evening.

I've had it booting at 2.95 GHz but not stable in windows (prime95 throws a few errors up)

Currently hoping to reach "rock solid stable" at about 2.835 GHz

Mobo is MSI K8N Neo4 Platinum
running 270MHz HTT, 10.5 multi, with CPU @ 1.5V
ram is running at 270MHz too so it's pretty zippy for memory-intensive apps

neither get an opteron 146 - cheaper 1MB cache and pretty much garaunteed 2.7GHz+ oc if your mobo can do 270-300HTT?

id get the San Diego cos the the extra cache they run at same temp as most amd cpus
mine runs the same temp as my freinds 3500 winchester

Winchest CPU's do run a little hotter than the Venice Chip, i know because i have had both on an identical system!

venices are good for overclocking but there again so are most amds

I'd get the Venice but that's cos I'm cheap! I've heard that San Diegos can run pretty hot.

Where did you see or hear that?
I'd like to see that.
My 3700+ SD runs 40 degrees @ 100% load with Prime95

I've been folding for the last 4 days non-stop with my SD3700+ running at 2.835GHz with a highish 1.58V. It's sitting at about 45/46 deg C under load
