I suspect he can still find a better quality sound for £50 by going down the hifi route than by going down the PC speaker route. 2nd hand kit is easy to source on ebay or there is the reconditioned / open box stuff fomr ritcher sounds.

Anyway, I guess we have to agree to disagree, I'll still always recomend a seperates system over a new PC speaker set in terms of sound quality but you are right he might struggle for £50.

    1. I wouldn't disagree that hi-fi separates are better for hi-fi. But we're not talking hi-fi, we're talking computer use. Which is games, DVDs, music and more games. This is a different requirement.

    2. Buying second-hand kit, whether hi-fi or otherwise has its downsides, and cannot be compared to buying stuff that comes with full warranties, manuals, and being pristinely new. Plus there are some things I would buy on Ebay, and some things I wouldn't...

My point is that the OP wants to buy some new apples - you are telling him to get some old (and/or expensive - and nothing's more expensive than something that doesn't do the job) pears. You can get the totally exellent Klipsch ProMedia GMX A-2.1 for £91.64 on Scan this week. Why settle for anything less (for more)?

Good bookshelf speakers designed for nearfield use will always sound better than even the best sub sat configuration, this is coming from someone who has a significant investment in such a configuration, mainly because i dont have room for the 5 bookshelf and 2 floorstanders id want to get 7 channel sound. Youd be amazed how much better the bass is on 'proper speakers' compared to the farty boomy horrible bass you get on most (cheap creative, and every logitech set ive heard the 6550 have a 4" driver IIRC) subs. Its horses for courses, if youre spending 200 quid, get a good amp and a set of monitors from richer, if its 100 quid, you wont be able to match the quality of the klipsch with new kit.

I'd go along with that. Spending £200 on computer speakers is a big waste of money IMO.

Not if you want surround sound its not. Youll never get a surround amp and speakers for 200 quid. But certainly for 2 channel

I have a great pair of hi-fi speakers at home, unfortunately they require an amp (another expense, and they are massive, which is unsuitable for uni halls. the room is small enough as it is.

I'd just like to get a similar powerful sound that i can hear, not just feel (the main problem with the Altecs.

The sub is under my desk, the bass is on max, i can feel my desk moving, i can tell the person under me is not happy with me, yet i get NONE of the bass into my ears, its just moving stuff but not actually creating audible bass. I think it may be the lack of a port in the sub enclosure.

Either way i'd rather have something that didn't shake so much and just brought the whole thing up some hz to the point where i can feel it a bit, but more importantly actually hear the bass

The Klipsch was my first choice until i got here, then my funds quickly went down, now i'm not sure if i can part with £90 for speakers, despite all the good things i've heard of them.

Hopefully the klipsch could actually provide the full range, especially mid-low

BTW, where are the £90 Klipsch? Scan are at £100:

You have to go through today only to ge tthe cheaper price. I had a pair of altec 2100s (i think) whne i was in halls, that although not the greatest sounding speakers ever, where pretty damn good (cost about 40 quid) Theyre the ones with the 2 aluminum drivers in the sats. Relatively small as well, volumes not really there, but theyre loud enough

I understand your problem Marcos, although my circumstances are different. I have a small study, which sits across a large hall from the main living area, and having a family means I can't always get to listen to the main hi-fi. In my previous houses I had larger rooms and used an Amp & Speakers that cost me a fair bit of money a few years ago.

I decided they just took up too much room for my new circumstances, and I also wanted some surround sound, so I got myself computer speakers instead. As I was buying a complete new system I didn't want to spend too much, so I had about the same budget as you. I have to say I was very pleasantly surprised by my Logitechs. I can certainly hear the bass, although I concur that compared to hi-fi speakers bass is not the strong point. After all it has to do two jobs and to some extent you are getting what you pay for. Almost all the user criticisms of the cheaper sets complain about the bass. I have to wonder if the complainers have a very nasty onboard sound solution though, because the bass is inaudible if I turn mine right down, yet I've seen people complain that it's still overpowering when turned down.

I found Pixmania had some very cheap prices on speakers, if you don't mind sending them copies of proof of identity. Otherwise EBuyer also had very good prices on what they stock.
But if you can't get up to £90, then from what you've written you may be disappointed on the bass - all the better 2.1 sets are in this sort of price range. I'd recommend the Logitechs, but the 2.1 set has a different bass unit (ought to be better considering the price is much the same as the 5.1 set, but things don't always work that way).
