    Modular PSU

Hey guys, got an antec p180 and using a tagan 480w in the system and its a bit of a tight fit and i only need a few of the many connections coming out of it, so the case is cluttered and hella messy.

Anyone got a modular psu that they recommend with stable rails, quiet, atx 2.0 and reliable?

I don't need a beefy one because i don't intend on using sli or anything like that.

I've been looking at the tagan easycon.. has less amp's than the normal version though which I found odd.. (look at the whitesheets)..

and I couldn't decide if it'd be enough for a x-fire/high end cpu etc. setup..
though no doubt I shall be asking when buying time comes around

Any of the Hiper psus's are nice and the modular connectors are very sexy, even though you'll never see them one it's installed.

yea.. easycon have their amp rating lowered due the the modular nature of the PSU.. keeping in mind the extra connections brings cable efficiency down..

but nonetheless, they are still perfect PSUs.. and the 24 pin, HDD and PCI-E power all have voltage swing regulators.. meaning you get less fluctuations in voltages.. did i mention earth cable? installing them was suggested to reduce voltage fluctuations to other components under load..

I've been looking at the hiper modular 580w's this morning, they do indeed seem good
Apparantly the new ones come with 2x PCI-e connectors too.. shame scan seem to only stock the old versions

Dunno if this is against any rules but PC World are selling them for 69.99 which works out the same with delivery. They have the new sli capable ones too.

    Yeah

I bought one on Sunday from pc world only to find out that one of the modular connectors wasn't giving out 12v (checked with multimeter), took it back on Monday.

Got an Akasa 460w on the way now bought for 40quid off ebay (retails at ~£60).

ok so hyper or tagan..hmm, around the same price range right? i'm not bothered about appearance, but the hiper does come in a cool box?! :O and i do trust tagan even tho one of my psu's stopped workin, but i got a brand new version next day after i told them about it!

    I'm still undecided!

I can only speak for the Hiper, but my opinion so far is very good. The modular system allows connection of only the leads you need (Not much of a plus point if you need all of them like me) and they come in varying lengths so if you only need to install a couple of them then you can install them with the most appropriate length to save squashing metres of loose cable behind things.

The Hiper is virtually inaudible unless you stick your head up against the exhaust.

The only bad point is relatively minor, I use mine in a Silverstone TJ03 case and the 4 pin motherboard lead reaches but doesn't allow enough slack to route it behind stuff to make it neater.

I also like the way the PSU keeps the rear exhaust fan running for a couple of minutes after you shut the computer down, and wish that Hiper could include a 3 pin pass-thru port for a case fan so that you could chose one of them to keep running for a couple of minutes after shutdown.

My Hiper is powering the following:-

    P4 630
    GA-8N SLI Royal
7800GTX (only one and I had to hide the receipt from my wife)
    SB Audigy
2 x Raptors in Cooldrive bays RAID 0 array
4 x ATA133 drives in two separate RAID 1 arrays
    2 x DVD/RW 16x DL
    Coolermaster Aquagate Mini
    2Gb Corsair DDRII 5400
    4 x 80mm case fans
    1 x 120mm case fan
    2 x activesync USB devices

The streetlights outside dim a little when I boot up, but it plays Far Cry at 1600 x 1200 with all features turned on and is completely stable. I got mine from PCW. The cool box it ships in I gave to my wife to put her hair straighteners and other such nonesense in.

    rofl great post

yeah my fiance does put a slightly funny face on when I mention my upgrade to x-fire thats going to happen in a month or so...
    hm.

So PCW actually sell these PSUs in store?
If it is the version with 2x PCIe I might .. buy it from PCW... but I'll feel so dirty doing so

I would say Tagan.. excellent rails... and they even allow manual changes to the split and combined rails. These babies don't carry flashy lights or UV boxes.. but boy arent they stable.. never had problems with them.. My recommendations DEFINITELY!
