Bigger fans are usually quieter actually.
In terms of stock heatsink, the AMD is racking good reviews. No doubt it won't compete against the XP-120, but one review shows it on par with the XP-90.Originally Posted by aidanjt

Decisions decisions..
Thats the thing. My PC is humming, but I don't know what is causing the most noise right now:
Case fans? CPU Cooler? X1800XT? -Something- is humming and I don't have time right now to look into it. And swapping everything for silence will probably end up costing some £100.
(The only thing I am sure is that my PSU is not the root of my problem)
I don't think it could've been louder than my Athlon XP o.O
The Aero 7 Lite was a good cooler for the cost: £7 - how good could something so cheap be? Not bad actually. Except for the noise. At max speed, 3500RPM, it sounds like a hoover, Matched only by my current machine on start up (again, not sure if it is my CPU or GFX card - but one of them go on max speed for 5 sec - which doesn't bother me since it quieten later on).
thats the X1800XT. As is the humming or whining as some people put it.Originally Posted by TooNice
Hopefully when mine arrives on thursday i wont find it *too* bad.
Are you sure? I am starting to think it is the CPU HS actually.
The X1800XT does add to the sound when I run 3D Marks06, but it is nowhere what I hear when I start my machine.
I just found out that the stock AMD cooler is actually a 5600 RPM Delta screamer O_O
I'll double check if mine is the same as the reviews, as the RPM on mine seems to be locked at 2800 until I toned it down to 2000 in the bios. Maybe the sound I hear was the fans at 5+k RPM, but it settle down after the machine has started..
I also can't rule out the case fans. I don't know what they are, or how fast they run.
Anyone know what fans are used on the Coolermaster CM 201 series?
My Athlon 64 3000+ (3 Chips), At stock speed, they run Prime 24x7 stable at 0.96V, 1.04V, 1.1V. On Stock heatsink, Arctic Freezer Pro 64, XP-90, none of them required a fan to cool. Hover around 45-50'C. It is a lot cooler than the NF4 chipset...
But I had to admit that they're not fast at stock speed.

The fan that came on my stock A64 hs is very quiet, its sitting ontop of an old akasa socket A HS atm in my sisters pc.
Just the way you said as you boot up it makes a right racket it sounded like at X1800XT as that spins upto full pelt before the driver profiles are loaded.
