Why is "I'm going to wait for final Conroe vs. AM2 comparisons to be performed before making a choice" not an option?
I' still on sktA, Im going to wait for conroe then decide.

Completly true. Why upgrade to a platform for a 5% performance increase. If the conroe numbers turn out to be true there will be a mass gamer migration from AMD to Intel.

AMD will need to respond with something better than AM2.

Upgrade. No chance. Not after what I paid last year for a 4400 x2, and 2gb of ram.

Now when the x4 or x8 processors come out in a year or two....

How do you find the X2 4400 now? because thats what i was thinking of getting rather than AM2, is it still worth getting now?

Fast as hell. And the mobos are more mature now. Expect a few teething troubles with the new AM2s for quite some time. I spend a lot of time downloading with newsleecher, or sabnzbd, unraring huge 4gb files, converting music to ogg, running DVD Rebuilder, and similar cpu intensive activities and the pc responds like normal. No more 30 second freezes while the maxed out CPU catched up. (Of course once most programmes become multithreaded I guess that will start happening again.)

This was the first time I bought new tech. I usually wait a year till it's almost obsolete and the price has dropped to bargain rates. It's much cheaper to upgrade that way... it just takes an iron will. Best bargains will probably be a couple of months after the AM2 is out and suppliers want to get rid of old stock.

Im happy with my system for the next few years. Its playing the games I want to play at a good level for now, and maybe only a RAM and gfx upgrade in the next few years and im happy enough. Id like to see what conroe has to offer in comparison to M2, but I doubt I will be doing a full re-build for the next 4 years or so.

I have a Socket A (Athlon 1000) home server that is begging for more CPU and RAM and could do with chucking out less heat, so I am considering an AM2 Sempron for it. It could happily live with S754, but when K8L comes out it will be nice to just swap motherboards between my workstation and server and upgrade the CPU.

Anyone seen any benchmarks on the virtualisation support yet? I use VMWare all the time, so that could interest me.

K8L sounds damned impressive, here's hoping that Conroe forces AMD to release it early

Will most likey stay with 939 until my 1gb becomes unusable....when it comes time to buy new memory, ya might as well switch platforms.. till then an opty 146 is fine, and a cheap dual-core in the future would be dandy..

I'll be getting one, but only because I decided to upgrade (from an XP2000, bit long in the tooth now..) for Oblivion and they're the best processors around right now (in my opinion at least). Dont really seem like much of an upgrade over the X2's otherwise, in fact some previews show them as being slower! Guess the mobo BIOS's will need time to get as refined as the current crop.

I'm a little torn over what to do at the moment. I've been asked to upgrade two socket A systems to 939's or similar but I'm not sure if i should just wait another month to get AM2 systems. From what I hear (here and elsewhere) are that the differences will be minor but the AM2 systems would give an upgrade path as I doubt the 939 X2 chips will be in retail channels much after June.

Oh one other bit about the AM2 systems which I don't believe has been mentioned, its been suggested that the only performance increase will occur when the new DDR2 800 is released in June. I'm unsure if this will make much difference as tests with DDR1 533 on the last A64 memory controllers made little difference over the performance.

I'm gonna get a sempy 3000 with a decent mobo and 2GB value RAM. That'll give me a nice spare linux rig and an easy upgrade path to K8L.
I reject your reality and subsitute my own.

I thought K8L needs a new socket as it will have DDR3 support.

I'm certianly not upgrading my 939 to AM2, especially since we all know that AM3 with DDR3 RAM is just one year later. We will see what that brings.

I will probably go with an opteron socket though anyway... and who knows if the desktop and server sockets will be consolidated at that point.

My X2 will hold me a few years.

K8L is the CPU core design, they don't have to release it with the DDR3 memory controller. Samsung seem dubious as to whether DDR3 will even happen on the desktop.

Sounds from the roadmaps like they are diverging (eg no support for FB-dimms on the desktop, thankfully).
