If I get a desktop next I will probably get the 6400 (seems to be the best bang for buck), though as it's for uni looks like it be laptop

I am well experienced at bringing laptops back into the country, never been questionned once, and obviously have bought other things - there's never anybody in the customs area anyway!!!Originally Posted by arthurleung

i thought you would only get charged for it if its for resale etc
you can get gifts sent from the US VAT free so why not buy a gift for yourself?
Oh no you can't, unless the value is less than £36. And they will check and independently value goods...Originally Posted by -ChEM-

That's postal. Importing by person and you get up to something like 145 quid items fine. Go at a good time for the exchange rate and that can be almost 300 dollars worth (in the US).
But yeah - OCUK charge a premium for early adopters, which is perfectly within their right to. People who actually look around will often find better deals, but that's how the market works
I know the AMD prices are meant to be slashed next Monday, I'm going to wait till then and see what happens.

For the people who are after conroe's in the UK then got some dates for you -
Dabs were saying 18th of August is when they are expecting the shipment!
Novatech says the 23rd on the site but there telephone support says there internal system has no date for when they will be available, and given the 23rd is the Sunday its very very suspicious.
There is one UK supplier that is due in the 26th and already has one of the conroe's in stock (E6300) but not going to say that as you lot will swamp them and steal the precious's And no its not OcUK who no doubt will have them somepoint next week or this but after previous bad experiences I wont order CPU's from.
Scans are available from 24th July apparently
Aria have them from 25th July
Your third post here is "lots of places won't have them for ages, I know who will but I'm not telling"??! Thanks for your contribution!Originally Posted by ukle
Specialtech. Everyone, it's Specialtech.
But they are OEM not Retail so presumably they have them because they should be in systems.
I'm curious, when AMD launched their AM2 there was nothing in the shops for ages.Originally Posted by kalniel
Do you think Core 2 Duo will be widely available after all? And do you think Monday will bring cheaper prices than pre-order price from Scan, Overclockers, etc?
Widely available? Not entirely.. I think it's going to be a little bit like the 7800gtx 512, but not as extreme. I think there will be an initial stock then a slight lull before picking up again (probably similar to X360 distribution really )
Cheaper prices? Don't think so. Some retailers may be trying to charge a quick buck with pre-ordered (Overclockers and similar prices), but places like SCAN tend not to do that kind of thing. I think intel are going for quite an impact against AMD, so I've a feeling the prices are coming in lower than they might otherwise have done - then demand may keep prices at (or even above) the initial level, before things naturally fall over time.
I also think Intel have more in their pockets to come.
