My three are normally on all day and night running SETI but my main one gets turned off sometimes as it does get a bit hot.

Depends. If I get in the mood to Fold again, it's pretty much 24/7. Even kept it going 1 month straight and that was with a Win98 install. If I feel like downloading/uploading some things, again that'll be a 24/7 job. However, I usually leave it at "16/7"...turned on during the day as it serves as a gateway for the 2-comp network and WCIII for my bro (it's shared, not installed in his comp).

The good think about my electricity tariff is its cheap electricity between Midnight and 7am, 2p per unit instead of the usual 6p.

I only turn my PC on when I need it.

Or if i'm downloading something I usually leave it on overnight or something to let it finish.

And people who leave their computer on 24/7 are actually doing it some good because turning your computer on and off does put some strain on your processor/sysytem

I flick on my Shuttle whenever I use it. I don't do any folding or SETI so there's no need to have it on when I'm not there.

It just seems like a waste of money to have it running when its not being used using up electricity. I wonder does turing it off lengthen he lifespan of the components?

24/7 here but then I am a heavy downloader.... PC is quiet enough to sleep 8 feet from it which also helps.... Longest I had was 14 days IIRC and I only rebooted to install a new HDD which was about a week ago.

Will need to reboot tonight tho as I have updated some Norton stuff and it needs rebooted....
