How long is your computer on for?

I've seen a lot of people mention that they leave their computer on 24/7. This got me wondering how many people do this. I personally only have my Shuttle on when i use it and I really can't see any reason to have it on while I'm at work. When I mod the PSU I definatley don't want to take the risk in leaving it on for hours.

What are the advantages/disadvantages of leaving it on the whole day?

mines been on for the last 10 days straight downloading, normally its on most of the day though depending on what im doing (its a shuttle btw)

my meter came to ~400 kw's used
this is pc(overclocked), pump, monitor, speakers, scanner, printer, router, cable modem.

£30ish for 3 months aint too bad..

im gonna start turning off my monitor/speakers/printer/scanner when they're not in use tho..

my system : all day, not on the night because its too loud !!

i keep my pc ( SN45 ) on for days at a time... iam either downloading or uploading so i never turn it off think is been on for 5 days straight

For me, it's a mix. My server is on pretty much 24/7. Normal working machines are on from morning to whenever I finish with them, then turned off. That might be one machine or several depending on what I'm doing. Some machines are configured for specific tasks, and are therefore only likely to be on while I need them for that specific task, then turned off. Some aren't turned on for weeks at a time.

The firewall/router's on 24/7, as it my file server. The family PC is on during the day & evening, the kids hav their pc's on mainly in the evenings & my BSD box is on evenings & weekends.

my main rig is on basically from when i wake ,i then turn it off when i goto to bed

my download box when i load it will be turned on when i goto to bed and off when i get up

Server / Download Box : On all the time, current up time is 6 days
Main System : Most of the day

Noise is really the only thing that prevents 24/7 use. The server has been banished to the attic.

Mines on from 7 in a morning when i go to uni till like 10 or 11 at night. The pc is like three years old and runs off a 230 watt psu. It hacks it no problem. In the process of upgrading though. Some serious power coming tomo. 3gig Athlon 400fsb

If I had a dog it probably would, but seeing as I'm the only guy in a house wth 5 females, I'm the next best thing.

Have 3 that are on 24/7 and my main one is only on when I use it.

Mine stays on all day if I'm at home or out for a couple of hours (some days at college) but if I'm out all day (full day at college) it stays off. I always turn it off at night.

4 computers, on 24/7, since July 2001, give or take a few systems.

Why? Crunching proteins, UD project, Cancer Cure thingie.

Must admit, I'm beginning to think enough is enough, and I may soon only switch them on when I'm using them, the electric bill's a little frightening.

Each computer has a specific use, one is dedicated to video editing, for instance, they're not there solely for the UD project.
