Hi folks, recently i've gone from an AthlonXP1700+ and Radeon 9200SE to a AthlonXP3000+ and 6600GT, still sticking with my unbranded 300w PSU.
Since then, i've been experiencing seemingly random lockups, and graphical corruption - is it a safe assumption that its the PSU at fault and not the CPU/GPU?
I'm away to stick in the 9200 again and see how it goes, I guess that'll kinda tell me too.

Yes it is pretty safe to say its a power supply buy one thts at least 400w test it and if its still the same return it
You've swapped from ATI to NVIDIA. Make sure you cleaned up all the drivers properly.

By properly, what do you reccomend?
I did the following;
- DriverCleaner Pro to remove the ATi Files, and then went into Device Manager and uninstalled it from there.
- Removed card and booted with the 6600GT and installed the nVidia Omega Drivers
...did I miss a step?

I'm guessing you have the same motherboard?
Personally any major changes to my system I will do a re-install of Windows as it means it will be completely clean and safe to use. Changing from ATi<->Nvidia is always a pain as removing drivers completely can be a troublesome task. For the most part you do seem to have done it right.
The PSU is a very small one though, and unbranded means it's even worse, a branded 400W should sort you out.

The 6600 series cards are quite power hungry. Couple that with your generic PSU and i think you have answered your own question.
What is the specs of the PSU you have? Post them up and all will be revealed.
This PSU: 500W Xclio X12S4P2 SLI Goodpower 12cm Fan Dual 12v EPS SATA PCI-E with Anti-Vibration 24x7 Use Ready (Sorry...i couldnt post the URL as the site wouldnt allow it). Its on SCAN though so take a look.
These XCLIO units are very popular in the USA but here they are pretty unheard of.
I wouldnt recommend it for SLI even though thats their spec but for any single carded system these will perform VERY well.

My current PSU, I can't find any specs for it - this machine was built by someone for us about 4 years ago when I didn't have a clue about PC's.

Forget the wattage.
There are MANY 350W PSUs that are far more powerful than Generic 600W models.
Honestly, that XCLIO for around £35 is an exceptionally good buy.
With the PSU that came with that case (obviously a poor PSU) you are asking for problems.
Also, with weak Generic PSUs, when they decide to die, they tend to take things like CPU, memory and/or GPU cards with them.
This: 350W FSP Sparkle Blue Storm 350-60THN-P, 12cm Fan ATX2.0 (20+4Pin) SATA/PCI-E is also very good for the money aswell and would run your system with ease.
For £32 thats exceptional value also.

I've had problems even turning my computer on due to a dodgy PSU. Got a new one from aria & that has fixed that problem, think my motherboard is a little dodgy as well unfortunately :s

Right, got a 350w one in the machine, also unbranded (well, eBuyer - so pretty much!) and its more stable, it runs the RACE Demo fine, and Doom 3, however I still get random lockups in Guild Wars and Rome Total War, which i thought odd.
I tried running the PC off the 350w PSU and the GFx card off my 300 (by bridging 2 pins on the 20-pin connected to make it turn on), but I still got the lockups in RTW (never testin it with GW)...
Having said that, i'm still in agreement that its a PSU issue, I used a PSU calculator to work out the required wattage for my machine (taking into account Capacitor Ageing etc) and it came to 344w

It's sis chipset mobo right? Maybe you should check this thread, I heard many people fix thier problem by turning "write cobine" off in display property.
I cant help but wonder why you bought another unbranded 350w psu? If the psu was the problem before, it could just as easily be the problem again.

Get a 400W+ Tagan or other branded, you'll be good to go.
I do some powersupply design at work, and when you look at the cost of the unbranded ones you wonder how they work at all - or last more than a year or so - at anywhere near rated wattage. And they mustn't comply with any of the CE regulations (EMC especially), they just 'self certify' and stamp away.
