Well, i'll fly whatever you put in front of me - i'm not complaining - just saying if there IS a choice i'd rather go F15/SU27/Mig and land to re-fuel.

Anyhoo - catch u lot on MSN 8pm ish

MrFlibble - if you join - im sure the guys will talk you through getting (whatever we decide to fly) airborne

Ok, I'll make a few Su33's for the lads willing to give it a go, and the rest MiG29S's for the wimps.

Yeah you'll be fine Flibble. The Russians do things as simple as possible, so if you can fly the F15 a Flanker won't be a problem at all.

To use the BVR radar do as follows:

    • Press 2 - HUD will go "blank" and your right hand MFD will clear up of nav data etc.
    • Press I - this will turn your radar on. Notice the cone appear on the MFD, and some flicking lights on the HUD showing where the radar is scanning
    • Radar contacts are shown up on the HUD as small lines. Single lines are unknown contacts, double lines are friendly. The closer they are to the top of the HUD, the further away they are.
    • Use the , . ; / keys to move the target designator around the HUD. Tab locks up a target
    • Once it's locked select a R27 for long range. Once LA appears in the bottom of the HUD you can fire. Keep the target locked up until the missile hits home. If it breaks lock, the missile is a dud and you'll need to fire again.
    • If you get closer than 10nm then switch to mode 3 or 5 and use R73 missiles

for those that care heres a quick overview of how to refuel inflight.

    1. Find the tanker! either use AWACS or common sense and close in behind it at the same altitude and not *too* quickly.

    2. As you close to about 2km press R to extend your refueling probe. This will also turn your HUD to refuel mode. The top left and right in small letters are the tankers speed and height (the height is actually the height of the drogue that your aiming for)

    3. you can select which drogue you are going to contact with by using your waypoint change button, the choices are 1,2,3 (left wing, body, and right wing respectively) slow down to about 5-10kph faster then the tanker so you slow get closer. The number at the bottom of the HUD is the distance. What you need to do is to keep the circle that is float around the HUD in the centre. This is your aiming reticle, when it is in the centre you are head right for the drogue. You need to be very gentle, or else you'll be all over the shop. At some point the tanker pilot should clear you to connect, this means your allowed to form up and get fuel, but be warned he also might ask you 2 wait! others might have a more urgent fuel status then you and so will have 2 fuel b4 you. if this is the case then just stay back abit and watch until ur turn.

    4. Once you contact the AP should take over and fly you in formation whilst you get fuel, it was this I had trouple with, my AP seems to be totally haywire (it always has been!) so i found it nearly impossible 2 stay with the tanker as I was fighting the AP.

    5. When done press R again to disconnect, slow down and break off! Thats it!!

Hints - use H and J the height and speed auto holds, they will make ur life much easier!! Personally I just use J as I like 2 control it my self. Lastly as I already said, be GENTLE!!!

    Good luck

Oh brilliant, BVR is pretty much the same as for the F15 then
Thanks for the info, you're all most helpful. I'll read through the manual and play about a bit beforehand.

Is this scheduled for tonight by the way?, cos I think I have to go and film a school play tonight

Merlin, why you hate the Su-33. It's brilliant imo May not be as good looking as the Mig-29 but its got it all - Mid air refueling,
Ground attack weapons (su-27 a nono, and mig can only take about 2 bombs),
    Better manouverablity over the 27.

    I'm up for a 33 lowe
    unlucky flibble btw m8

Hmm, well now i'm confused cos truth to be told i've flown it twice and it felt a bit clumsy.

Ah well, i'll fly 33 with you lot then and if it feels like an airbus i'll know who to blame

It's only clumsy if you fly it like a Yankee.

The 27/33 is all about being gentle. She is not your "bitch" like the F15 where you can chuck all kinds of stick input in and it behaves. Oh no, the Flanker is a lady and demands respect else she'll not behave which is where I think you get this lardy impression from.

Remember slow down and bring the input in smoothly.. once you start to see the cockpit shake you know you're on the limit. Keep on pulling and you'll push it beyond the flight envelope... can be useful sometimes but in general it's not.
