    Strike Fighters

I picked this up 2nd hand off Amazon for a tenner.

    Money well spent

This game came out a year or 2 ago, something went very wrong in the original release and the game ended up on American shelves only 3/4 finished, subsequently the game got slated for being released in an incomplete state.

Anyway - this was re-released with the first long awaited patch and what a little gem it is. The game is open-architectre, anyone is free to create terrain, planes, explosion effects (one guy is making a tactical nuke which is very near completion)

The sim is based on the early US jets of the 60's, all engine, no frills. No head up display, merely a gunsight, you lock a sidewinder on by listening to the audible tone as you get the bogey in your gunsight - the dogfighting is out of this world, and beats LOMAC by a mile in my opinion, guns guns guns and unreliable missiles - incredible explosion effects, debris, the feeling of speed as a Mig 17 flashes across you with guns blazing has to be seen to be believed

The best bit about this game is the community, loads of talented 3D modellers producing free add-on aircraft which are every bit as good as the stock planes that come with the game, Harriers, Migs, A-7 Corsairs, the amount of quality stuff available for free download is staggering.

Aside from the default desert map, I have Vietnam, Europe, America Northwest and North Cape, all made by 3rd party modellers and artists, and its getting better and better.

Multiplayer i haven't tried yet, but I've been assured it is very good, but like all other aspects of this game its a rough diamond that needs a little polish.

And you don't have to strip your PC down to a no-frills hot-rod to run it either

I acquired this very early on. I saw it's potential but it wasn't quiet there. Time to dig it out and apply the patch I think.

    Deffo worth considering Moby.

It isn't LOMAC, and don't be expecting to see waves lapping at shores, individual clouds you can fly through, BUT the planes models, the air-combat, and the immersion in my opinion after 4 days of solid play are far superior to Lomac.

Lots of stuff is still in development, and lots of the sim look primitive by Lomac standards - ity very much depends what you want out of a sim, if eye candy is your bag, Lomac, if you want a little more going on around you and an unlimited scope of stuff to download and add on for a long time to come, try this

multiplayer isn't good - it is still being worked on (the developer is still supporting the game & there is more stuff to come).
(Skii, talk to ArmourDave - he's done quite a lot of multiplayer)
iirc works better on LAN than on the Internet & with relatively low nos. of players.

    Main forum is on SimHQ.com.
As Skii says there is a lot of stuff being worked on - new, graphically improved terrains as well as new a/c (for you Il2 types there is an Fw190 coming, we've already got a Mustang & Thunderbolt).
If you don't like missiles try the 3rd party add on F-86 Sabre - quite possibly my fav. a/c.

& whatever you do, don't buy anything that says Walmart release (the publisher shafted the developer by releasing a beta - they had a contract with Walmart to sell them a game at a certain date & the game that was originally planned was nowhere near ready so they substituted SF to avoid penalties). That 's the debacle that Skii referred to.
The Walmart release isn't compatible with the 2 patches (Euro release was already patched to Sp1) & ongoing addons etc..

I haven't installed that yet (odd seeing as I was one of the first d/l mirrors ) so i can't say.
Ask/search on SimHQ is all I can suggest.

It's much better than before the patch.

I had an insodent with the superstructure of a ship. Still flew though! You can just about make out the one I took out with my wing tip.
