question: is it worth shooting in RAW mode? or stick with the usual jpeg mode? im off to paris this weekend so i need all the advice i can get lol. still using the crappy stock lens that came with the 400d :(
Also, how do i know what Apperture settings you guys used in the pics in this thread? i heard their is a firefox plugin for it?
Shoot Raw if you are going to enlarge your pics and foe better quality, if not stick to Jpeg to save card space. If space is not an issue stick to Raw. Happy shooting.
Generally, RAW files give you more flexibility with exposure - you can alter the exposure etc in post processing without affecting IQ as much as you would if it was a JPEG.
Also, RAW files have a greater dynamic range than JPEG iirc? Not sure about this, but I know that it is possible to create a psuedo-HDR pic from a single RAW file. So if you're shooting a scene with lots of contrast that's hard to expose, switch to RAW, do your best to expose properly, and correct afterwards if needed.
As for the Firefox plugin, just search for something that allows you to see the EXIF data on photos :)
great shot VM :) bit of PS and that could look like a mystical realm :)
JPG = little recovery for underexposed shot, no recovery for overexposed shot (blown)
RAW = 2 stops+ recovery for overexposed

something hit the moon?
I thought that was gonna be tonight.. not last night.. -.-;
Is there going to be anymore showers tonight?
Good shot Bob.
Blastuk you should see mets tonight if you have a clear sky.
Fair amount of cloud here as well atm so not looking promising.
no meteors here... just sad times for me:

my chassis on my car decided it didnt want to be attacked to the boot floor anymore... a photo from yesturday from under the car... not interesting... but this is photo a day... no-1 said they all have to be spectacular shots :p
forgot about the meteor showers tbh... nice shot on that last one bobster... great timing!
have no advanced warning of when there will be a meteor or where.. so 80 shots to get 1! i lucked out :)

been asked by local camera shop to supply a load of photographs @ A1 size so they can display them in their windows :D
We were in the posh bit, which was a whole track and an annoying pair of rails away unfortunately.

looks like the sun was against you as well, great shot , all 4 feet off the ground!
http://www.pbase.com/bob_hall/image/116124045.jpg
Nice girl and good shot :) Yes the sun was behind the horses as well, but the hood that came with the lens is pretty deep and did a good job, the main problem the sun gave was highlight fringing off that white rail. You can't see it in the web-resized pictures but it really pisses me off at 100% :p (Should be easy to correct, I just don't have a tool that does it easily).
do you work out on the rigs Merdat?

Bob how do you find the shots scale up to an A1 print detail wise?
Excellent (wet!) bee pics, you've got the DoF spot on.

Well done on the bee shots, macro stuff looks like so much fun, I think my next lens is going to be the 60mm macro.
Taken at the treehouse gallery thing in regents park, if you like hippies you might want to give it a visit;

Great bee shots Yorkie, no i'm retired just do some sailing on this thing
http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l2...1/IMG_9337.jpg
Funkstar, always seem to sail past the 'c' bit, next time that I go up there think that we'll try and go further north so as to get a few better shots of the main platform etc plus they have a couple of wind machines out there now -don't know how long these things will last out there in the winter storms although they have been there now for a couple of years I think.

I don't know why but I am in love with your last shot, the texture of the sea is fantastic!
Were they running? When I was Beatrice they were waiting for a gearbox overhaul.
I don't know when they were installed, but they were the biggest in the world when built. Quite experimental I think. At the moment, the platform takes all its power from onshore, the turbines are designed to replace that power need. Once the platform is de-comissioned they will feed power back to the mainland. There is also a plan to build up to 200 more in the same area.
Any good?

if its decent enough i may make a seperate thread to show loads more pics of my visit to paris
Doesn't matter how good they are, having been to Paris countless times I'm still always interested in seeing pics.
I guess I mean that they might mean more to you, having been to the places you've taken a picture of, than to us looking on from the outside. It's not meant to be a criticism by the way, just an observation. But as an example, what was your thought process for taking the picture of the ferry, or what made you want to take the photo etc?
i dunno. maube its because i wanted to a picture of something with a lot of colour and variation and that ferry had a lot of variety in it.
i dont know am i rambling nonsense lol because im not an artistic photograther :)
i will post more pics later on a seperate thread.
All pics taken from the stock lens. do you think i can still produce better image quality on the above pics with the stock lens or have i finally reach the stock lens full potential?
i dont want to buy a £300 lens if i dont make good use of it for example.
before you splash your cash on a lens, if you are interested in taking your photography further, think about joining a local camera club (usually start up around the beginning of Sept - they have summer off..) talk to some people, and learn to use your camera and what you can achieve with it
Bob's so right, a few times I have thought to myself that my range of lenses have been 'holding back' my ability to take the images I want. Truth is it's only my ability that dictates the images I take. I really must get round to joining my local photography club:)
That's cool then :) It's what it means to you that's important.
I think you're getting fantastic pictures from a kit lens. Can't see anything wrong with them at web resolutions that a better lens by itself would improve. The only thing is whether you find yourself wishing you had a longer or shorter focal length to get the scene that you wanted. Once you've built up experience at your favourite focal lengths you can work out whether you're limited by the quality or not.Quote:

(Admittedly I bought an extra lens straight away, but that was the ultra wide angle to increase coverage, not because I didn't like the kit quality -in fact all my decent shots so far have been taken with the kits rather than the WA).
yea well at times i wished i had a better range with my shots as going up to 55mm on the stock lens is not close enough for my liking :(
For example i was on top fo the eiffel tower(well first floor lol) and wanted to zoom in and take pics but at 55mm its weak :(
if i was to get a new lens it would be something with a huge range such as this http://www.photozone.de/canon-eos/29...report--review
Certainly, if you wanted a stay on the camera type lens. Or you could simply get the other kit lens cheaply (55-250) which comes with stabilisation which is very handy at the long end.
I'm in New Zealand for a week. :D These had a quick edit on a laptop, so colours/contrast might not look right. I'll have to look at them properly when I get home.
Sydney Airport at about 6am on Monday.

Auckland at about 5pm.
http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m...eHillView1.jpg
These were stitched together but not very well. Canon's Photostitch always puts a squiggly line along the join. It's not noticeable at this size but anything much bigger is quite obvious. There's a white dot in the centre-right part of the photo. That's a child, although they're not supposed to go in the crater.
http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m...09/MtEden1.jpg
And just for fun, this is a car at a vets around the corner from where we're staying. :P It's quite famous around the world now. But it looks like it hasn't moved for a long time and it has no number plate so it might not be registered any more.
http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m...09/CatCar1.jpg
I was contemplating bringing my tripod, seeing as my luggage was only 11kg, but I didn't in the end. I think the only place it would be useful was on Mt Eden and One Tree Hill, but we're not planning on spending a long time up them.
I've seen the 24-105mm F4L is about £110 cheaper here. :juggle: Tempting, but no. :P
Gonna prove my ignorance here - but what caused that crater????????
BTW love the catmobile:)

These two getting a bit cosey
Mount Eden is an extinct volcano. I remember going down into the crater when I was 4 or 5 with my dad and he had to carry me out. :D I used to live in Auckland in the Mount Eden area. They've since banned people from leaving the paths around the hill. It's something to do with preservation or safety.
had a clean bill of health from the dentist, so I've taken a piccy of the hero of the hour

Plus boredom + macro lens = above pic
Kid have you got a bigger version of that pano online?
Not online, but I could sort one out some time.
Today I went for a walk in the Waitakere hills. It's thick rainforest there and we had a pleasant walk around a track. It was a bit too thick to get decent photos of the enormous kauri trees. I bet it's fantastic in Summer when the greens are stronger.

Removed the second from flickr, so it won't show anymore
I like them, though the white balance seems to be different between the two. The second one has a lovely fairytale warmth to it.
Yep, second one has a warming filter :)
kill the filter..
as long as you capture the important detail, don't worry about blowing the rest..
Good point, I really enjoyed getting the candid moments when I could. Poses really only go so far.

Which show Bob? Duxford?
nah, not Duxford
http://www.pbase.com/bob_hall/image/116376525.jpg
was that at Shoreham? Have you got the exif data for that photo Bobster?
There was an air show at Bournemouth today; and I got stuck in loads of traffic whilst trying to visit my parents who live there. However, because of the traffic, I took a detour into the New Forest and came across these: -

These are just the JPEGs. I have the RAW files which I need to tweak with; although I'm not sure how yet. :embarrassed:
Took these today on a day out while the weather was nice. (Be nice, it's only my second outing with a DSLR)

EDIT: They look a bit blurry on here but the originals are very sharp (i suspect it's the resizing) - the second is my current desktop background :)
Second and third ones look good whiternoise, they look sharp to me. Colours on the first one are too saturated for my tastes (lol coming from the Oly shooter I know).
see i like the first, but finding the foreground a little dark :)
I agree that the first one looks too unnatural.
My first attempt - had a bit of a play around with the colour balance and sharpened it up a bit but it's still too dark in the foreground:
http://img134.imageshack.us/img134/5005/67875945.jpg
My second attempt - foreground looks a lot better but the sky is completely washed out now. Actually ended up 'blurring' it again - reducing the noise:

Still haven't bought that spirit level then j.o.s.h.1408 ? :p
(PS would be really nice if you could resize them a little bit too :D)
more from Sat, last one here, i'll post a load in their own thread later :)

lol sorry. blooming imageshack is soo crap
i saw this in the currys shop. looks too good to me true at that price tag http://www.currys.co.uk/martprd/stor...&category_oid=
Thanks :)
A couple of points though, first that these are straight out of photomatix and i haven't had the chance to fiddle properly yet - i just got back with 3000 photos from Poland :P
Secondly sharpening is only worth it on these resolutions (due to imageshack resiszing), the full size photos are good as they are imo and you don't get that overly sharp effect on the tree line.
Yup - I took your word for them being sharp prior to resizing but it looked so muddy here I had to unsharp mask it. That said I like the noise removal in my 2nd attempt - makes it look like mist or fog and brings the foreground out more - though again that could all be down to the resize! If I had the skills I'd be trying to produce something along the lines of a mix of the sky from my 1st attempt with the rest in the 2nd (and maybe bring the foreground out a bit more if possible without ruining the image quality). All that said I still like the pic and I'm just a holiday snapper so feel free to ignore me!
Up the England!
Great shot mate :)
I'm doing a 'stage' in France this summer. It started off pretty well, but the last 2 weeks have been dire after they ran out of work for me - I've been putting questionnaires into alphabetical order so that... they can go in a box never to be looked at again. Job satisfaction?
Luckily the company needed some photos taking for their website and brochure so I bit their arm off. Bit too hard really, they were a bit pissed that I didn't want to shuffle paper for another week, but at least I got my assignment :)

The third I overpowered the ambient with the flash a little bit - I've got some normal ones too but I wanted to play.
can't tell you used flash for the 2nd one, the 1st one may have a hint if you look hard enough..
agreed with the 3rd, it just screams flash when you look at it
