Thats a really big telephoto lens
So I'm attempting to take at least 1 photo a day no matter what.. This is becoming quite a challenge already and it's only been a few days!

Nice!
I've seen them a few times over the years - Sick of Drugs live is brilliant. Looking forward to the pics.
Thanks Bob, probably the first time manual focus has worked quite so well for me, extremely satisfying when it works.
I really have no idea what to say about your teddy bear though, I just looked at it/him and thought wtf!!

Mini show at Castle Combe today.
Why is it always only one shoe on the side of the road? Why is it never a pair? And how do you even lose a shoe on a race track?
http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2675/...519b206b_o.jpg
Most of my other photos were the usual "cars round a track" shots that wouldn't mean much to people who aren't interested in the cars.
LOL at the random shoe :D
Taken a few weeks ago, this one was at my first paid photo shoot - 4yr old party. Never had to work so hard. Doing weddings is a piece of cake compared to keeping up with 20-30 2-10 year olds running around the place!
Initially wanted to use a plate as a reflector, but she grabbed it from me and started pulling funny faces. This was probably the best of the lot

loving the lighting on that one monkey!
It's not a rubbish lens.. and it's worth *some* money..
Shot from earlier
http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2496/...a0dc0bcd_d.jpg
@ josh, I get some decent shots and some nice macros with a conversion kit out of that lens :); and it depends by what you mean about "add a bit of photoshop". I did a levels tweak and a bit of sharpening, but it's OOC otherwise :)
So what's your method of focusing on a spiderweb?
manual focus
Yeah, it's almost impossible otherwise since the camera ends up hunting forever, or focuses on whatever's behind the web.
The only way you could do it with AF is if there was a leaf or a dead bug or something substantial stuck in the web to focus on.
I dunno - with phase detect I agree it's tricky, but contrast detect seems to get webs really easily.

awwww... :)
Right, back to manly things like steam and coal and engines!
I'm also going two photos over, so if you're not a geek then enjoy the first pic and skip the rest :p
http://img34.imageshack.us/img34/3074/leawoodpump.jpg
This is Leawood pumping station. It was built between 1845 and 1849 to top up the Cromford Canal with water from the River Derwent (Arkwright, mills & stuff). It still runs, but since boats don't use the canal as much they only fire it up a few times a year. The distance it's pumping the water is quite impressive really, but I didn't get a good photo that represented it.
Anyway, there are two coal fired boilers, capable of generating 40 PSI apparently:
http://img24.imageshack.us/img24/5673/leawoodpump4.jpg
These push down a piston in a 50" diameter cylinder with a 9 ft stroke (black thing in the background of the following pic)
http://img180.imageshack.us/img180/3...awoodpump3.jpg
.. which in turn pulls down one side of a 27 ton beam
http://img97.imageshack.us/img97/8470/leawoodpump2.jpg
Attached to the other end is a 15 ton plunger which obviously rises, sucking in water.
http://img40.imageshack.us/img40/2021/leawoodpump5.jpg
Then the valves switch (foreground of the cylinder picture) and the plunger falls under it's own weight, driving the water up to the canal and out at a spot near the white posts in the first picture.
You know those thumpers in HL2? It was just like one of them - same kind of period, sound, and ground shaking vibration! If you're ever in Derbyshire on one of the firing dates then I highly recommend a visit (http://www.middleton-leawood.org.uk/)
Wow! That's a future trip for me :D Beautiful location and heavy machinery!
I love the first pick, but am I right in thinking that there's a bit of perspective distortion there.
Not quite - think I'd be posting on Hexus this much if I had a new baby? :p He's my nephew.

Nice!
Damn, those are the kind of clouds I've been searching for but never found.
Rugger, have you done some NR on that one? Was it a high ISO?
Do you find that its easier to get that sort of loverly colour by increasing the dynamic range.
No NR, ISO 200, some contrast adjustment. We actually had a sunset near us a few weeks ago that was very similar. I have an early starting job, so just got lucky with this one. I took it with my Sigma 17-14mm wide angle.
This one was taken with my new 70-200mm f4.0L at 70mm, with some contrast and saturation adjustments, ISO 100

I haven't used my camera for a while so I thought I should play around with it. I took some silhouette photos as the sun was going down at about 5:30pm. Of course, I've just noticed the sun is actually going down now and the sky is bright pink and looks amazing. Too late for me to go out and take some photos now, though.
I don't think I did anything to the sunset photos. The cloud ones had some contrast tweaks.

Nice deer shot, Ben :)
A good friend of mine is starting up her facepainting business and she runs a Saturday morning activity class in a hall and invited me along to take some photos (and I could really do with the practice!).
One of those really poorly lit halls, with just a few fluorescent tubes at the top making action photography (of 3 year olds running around) near impossible. I still need to work really hard at this, but there just isn't enough light to accurately focus on the kids running around. Decided to stick to the more static moments of when they were getting their faces painted.
The high ISO performance of today's cameras never ceases to amaze me!

Great pics Yorkie :)
Thanks Merdat
Rugger - I've already cropped the gull in flight a fair bit, didn't want to do it too much as it might degrade the quality too much but will have a pop.
love #1 there tftboy, a great expression
I didn't have a proper tripod on me so I used a mini one and put it on a bench; seemed to work fine :D
It's that time of year where you can get fireworks and sparklers etc, I intend to do a few more in a few days, anyone with good ideas on how to use sparklers?

Bit of long exposure. I kinda like the crazy flare going on.
Too warm! (For me at least) - love to see that as a B&W or nicely cold shot.
Love the big flare that's encompassing most of the shot - is there any more of the scene you can uncrop to accentuate it? Not so keen on the effect it's had with the nearest light - maybe if you cleaned up some of the 'smudges' between the rays it would be better IMHO.Quote:

Too warm Kalnial? Fair enough - I'll have a look later.
Here's a B&W of Edinburgh:
http://www.jaggerbramley.com/edinscr.jpg
Take my comment with two disclaimers: 1) I'm a novice, 2) I'm viewing it on two monitors with different calibrations. It looks less warm on my gaming monitor, but I know that that's calibrated a little cooler than normal (deliberately), and even then it's still a touch too warm for my tastes on that particular shot (I prefer the colour temp from the pre-compiled shots).
Nice.Quote:
Here's a B&W of Edinburgh:
Going along the Birdlip road tonight I decided to stop and get some photos of Gloucester. It was bloody cold, and standing on the edge of the hill caught all the wind so I didn't hang around for long, especially as I only had a T-shirt on. It was a bit strange standing in clear weather with an almost full moon behind me, and looking down on Gloucester, hidden in sheets of rain.
http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2590/...167a1574_o.jpg
On a side note:
I got my Redsnapper tripod on Friday having ordered it late on Wednesday evening. It's so much better than my older Velbon cx540! It doesn't wobble all over everywhere with my 50D and Sigma 50-500mm. It has rubber feet that can be screwed further up the legs to reveal some metal spikes, which is good for soft ground. One leg is sturdy enough to use it as a monopod. It's taller than my old tripod extended, and the same height retracted, so no more squating to take a photo. It comes included with a good quality shoulder bag. I'm pretty happy with it so far, although I haven't had much chance to use it.
cools shots guys :) well after 2 weeks of sickness im out and about again :D
