if you want to compare image quality then dpreview and steves digicams and image resource are the only places that you can compare diff cams shots with some accuracy
and why has nobody mentioned the olympus cameras ? the e300 is a pretty damn good price if you look around and the e500 aint bad either, ok so they are not the best at high iso but there still worthy of a mention if only for the dust buster feature
the new 500 is very good, and has that anti-dust thing inside it. why don't people take olympus seriously? they were class leading a few years back.

Okay looks like I will be going for the Nikon D50. Managed to find it at a good price on a couple of shops
Any other considerations before I buy it. Will I need any other accessories to go with it?
memory card(s), spare battery maybe, filter to protect the lens (cheaper to replace a scratched filter than a lens)
THings to get
1. Rocket blower 1st place I found, you might be able to get cheaper Helps keep you lenses and sensor clean. I give the lens mount a blow (oooerrr) before attaching to the camera.
2. Big SD card. I would suggest 1 gig if possible. Also look at faster ones as they allow more frames to be shot fast in continuous mode, sandisk ultra II is good, lexus do a X80 one.
3. A case of some sort, well worth checking out ebay, great deals on 2nd hand cases. CCS is good.
Big Nikon forums http://www.nikonians.org/ they have a D50 specific section.
If you decide you want a longer focal length lens I think its better to get a 2nd hand nikon or sigma/tamron etc to start, and then decide wether to upgrade later. I have a cheap sigma 100-300 (£70 ebay) and it takes good photos, to upgarde to a better lens is a lot of money, hope to do it at some point just not yet, and I should get my money back on ebay when I do.
I'm sorted for a memory card thanks but where can I get a filter from?
Possibly the shop that you are buying the D50 kit from.
You probably want a UV or skylight in whatever thread size the Nikon lens takes (52mm?)

Jessops, of all places, do the medium one for under a fiver. Well worth picking up.
keep meaning to pick one up, but always forget when i'm in town
OLYMPUS E-300 + EZ-1445 for £386 Inc. VAT is this camera any good? How does it compare to the D50?

they just announced it's replacement yesterday
Glad to say I picked up a Nikon D50 with basic lens today from PC World for £449 which was £20 cheaper than advertised. Been messing around with it all night and it's great. Get ready to hopfully see some good shots from me
